The government proposes increasing Nav's standard wig support from NOK 6,265 to NOK 7,455 in 2027. It also proposes increasing the higher rate. As of 2 November 2026, this is a budget proposal, not new amounts you are already entitled to.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion, Arbeids- og inkluderingsdepartementet, presented the proposal for higher wig support on 7 October 2026. The proposed start date is 1 January 2027. The national budget is being considered by Stortinget, Norway's elected national parliament.

Which amounts would change?
The proposal concerns two annual rates for people over 30. The government proposes a 19 per cent increase.
| Wig support rate | Current in 2026 | Proposal for 2027 | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard rate | NOK 6,265 | NOK 7,455 | NOK 1,190 |
| Higher rate for specific needs | NOK 16,220 | NOK 19,302 | NOK 3,082 |
The amounts were checked on 2 November 2026 against Nav and the government's budget proposal, section 2.2.6. The press release was corrected because its first version contained incorrect figures. The table uses the corrected amounts.
These are annual upper limits, not a promise that everyone will receive the full amount. A more expensive wig does not automatically entitle you to the higher rate either.
Who do the different rates apply to?
The higher rate applies to specific needs. According to Nav's current wig information, it can apply if you need an individually fitted wig or real hair because of your head shape or an allergy.
Nav, the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration, has a separate scheme for people under 30. Its limit is NOK 50,000 per calendar year, with possible exceptions in specific cases. The proposal described here increases the two rates for people over 30.
If you are close to your 30th birthday, ask Nav to clarify which age rule and rate apply to your order. Do not calculate your support based only on the headline about higher rates.
What conditions apply now?
Applications are still decided under the current rules. The budget proposal does not itself give you a right to support.
Nav requires membership of folketrygden, Norway's National Insurance Scheme. The hair loss must be substantial and normally expected to last at least two years. The two-year duration requirement does not apply when the hair loss is caused by treatment for an illness.
Nav lists hair loss due to illness, injury or treatment among the qualifying situations. The scheme also includes people with gender incongruence who have lost all or part of their hair, and women with significant androgenic hair loss. Nav assesses whether the conditions are met in your case.
What should you clarify before ordering?
Clarify the current rate, documentation and your own contribution before planning the purchase. Do not treat the proposed 2027 amounts as an approved award.
- For your first application, you need a medical certificate stating the cause, extent and expected duration of the hair loss.
- You choose your supplier. Ask for a quote showing what you may need to pay yourself.
- You can apply for prior approval if you want to clarify whether Nav will cover the costs.
Under current Nav rules, the support counts towards the calendar year in which the wig was ordered. An application submitted in a new year therefore does not automatically mean the order belongs to that year. Clarify your case with Nav and follow the final budget decision.
