What is the Samfunnskunnskapsprøven?

The Samfunnskunnskapsprøven is a mandatory multiple-choice test for people applying for permanent residency or Norwegian citizenship. It assesses knowledge of Norwegian society — democracy, history, health, working life, finance and rights — and is administered by approved test providers through HK-dir.

Who needs to take the test?

Most people between 18 and 67 applying for permanent residency or citizenship, and who received their residence permit after 1 September 2013, must pass the test. Some groups are exempt — check hkdir.no for the full list.

How many questions are there, and how much time do I have?

The test has 38 multiple-choice questions with three answer options each, and you have 60 minutes. 34 of the questions count toward your result; 4 are unscored pilot questions, and you don’t see which are which.

What is the passing score?

You need at least 26 of the 34 scored questions correct — roughly 76 %. Pilot questions never affect the result.

The test covers 11 topics from the official curriculum at samfunnskunnskap.no: New in Norway, Education and working life, Health, Children and family, Democracy and citizenship, Norwegian history, Personal finances, Sustainable development, Digital literacy, Violence and abuse, and Geography.

In which languages is the official test available?

The official test is offered in Norwegian bokmål, nynorsk, and English. You choose the language when registering with the test provider.

What does the test cost, and can I retake it?

The fee is set by each test provider — typically a few hundred kroner. There is no limit on retakes, but you pay a new fee for each registration.

You immediately get a 3-day free trial with up to 20 practice questions and 1 full exam simulation — no card required. After the trial you can choose a monthly plan or the exam package.

What’s on the dashboard?

The dashboard summarises your progress: completed simulations, categories you’ve mastered, weak areas, daily streak, and quick links to practice and flashcards.

What are «weak areas» and how are they calculated?

After every answer we update a mastery score per category (mastery = correct / total attempted). Categories with mastery below 60 % are flagged as weak so you know where to focus.

Where do I find past session results?

All exam simulations and practice sessions are stored under «Results» on the dashboard. Open each session to see which questions you got wrong and read the explanations.

Can I reset my progress?

Yes. Go to account settings on the dashboard and choose «Reset progress». It clears mastery scores and answers but keeps your account and subscription. To delete everything, use «Delete account».

How is the simulation different from practice?

The simulation matches the real exam format — 38 questions, 60 minutes, no explanations during the run. Practice has no timer and shows the correct answer with an explanation after each question.

What happens if the time runs out?

After 60 minutes the test submits automatically with whatever answers you’ve given. Unanswered questions count as wrong — just like the real exam.

Can I go back to earlier questions?

Yes. During the simulation you can navigate between all 38 questions and change your answers until you submit or time runs out.

What are pilot questions, and why don’t I see them?

Just like the real test, the simulation includes 4 pilot questions that don’t count toward the result. You can’t tell which are which — that’s what makes the score realistic.

We count correct answers among the 34 scored questions. 26 or more = passed (≈ 76 %). The result page shows a breakdown of correct/incorrect by category.

How often should I run a simulation?

We recommend 1–2 simulations per week during preparation, with a few more in the final stretch. Between simulations, focus practice on the categories you missed most.

What is category practice?

You pick one of the 11 categories (e.g. Democracy or Health) and work through questions from that area. Each answer is followed by the correct option and a short explanation.

What are flashcards?

Flashcards are flippable cards with a question on one side and the answer/explanation on the other. They’re optimised for quick repetition and work especially well on mobile.

What’s included in the free trial?

Why doesn’t practice have a timer?

Practice is for learning, not speed. You should read the explanation, look up terms in the glossary and move on at your own pace. The timer is reserved for the exam simulation.

Yes. In practice and result views you can mark a question as «hard», so it appears more often in flashcards and in targeted practice sessions.

The bank holds over 700 unique questions across 11 categories and three difficulty levels. We expand it regularly based on user feedback.

No. The questions are written by SamfunnPrep based on the publicly available curriculum at samfunnskunnskap.no. We do not reproduce the official HK-dir test questions.

Yes. Vipps is supported for both sign-in and payment. You need the Vipps app on your phone and a BankID-verified account.

How do I reset my password?

Click «Forgot password?» on the sign-in page and enter your email. You’ll get a link that’s valid for 1 hour. If it doesn’t arrive, check spam and that the address is spelled correctly.

Yes. In account settings, update your email and confirm the new address via the link we send — the change takes effect once confirmed.

Can I sign out of all devices?

Yes. Account settings has a «Sign out everywhere» option that ends all active sessions and requires a fresh sign-in on every device.

How do you protect my account from brute-force attempts?

We use Cloudflare Turnstile on sign-in and password reset to block automated attempts, and server-side rate limiting on repeated failures. Passwords are always hashed with bcrypt.

What’s the difference between Monthly and the Exam Package?

Monthly (149 NOK/mo) renews automatically each month and can be cancelled any time. The Exam Package (349 NOK) is a one-time payment for 90 days of access, with a «pass guarantee» — 90 extra days if you don’t pass on the first attempt.

We accept Visa, MasterCard and American Express through Stripe, and Vipps for Norwegian customers. We never store your card details — everything is handled by Stripe and Vipps.

What currency am I charged in, and is VAT included?

All prices are quoted in NOK and include VAT where applicable. Stripe will convert automatically if you pay with a foreign card.

Where do I find my receipt?

Stripe emails the receipt right after payment. You’ll also find your billing history in the Stripe customer portal, accessible from dashboard/account → «Manage subscription».

How do I update my card?

What if a payment fails?

Stripe retries automatically a couple of times. Check that your card isn’t expired, that you have funds, and that international payments are enabled. If it still fails, contact support@samfunnprep.no — we’ll help.

Can I get a refund if I change my mind?

We follow Norwegian consumer law. The monthly plan can be cancelled any time and stops renewing. The Exam Package (one-time payment) is non-refundable once you start the first simulation, but you have a 14-day right of withdrawal if the service hasn’t been used.

Which browsers are supported?

We actively test the last two versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on both desktop and mobile. Older browsers may work but are not guaranteed.

How do I install SamfunnPrep as an app on iPhone/iPad?

Open samfunnprep.no in Safari (not Chrome — Apple does not allow PWA installation from other browsers on iOS). Tap the Share icon and choose «Add to Home Screen».

What works offline?

Once the PWA is installed, the interface and static content (articles, glossary) work offline. The exam simulation and answer storage need an active connection so we can save the result to the server.

Why is there no sound on iPhone?

Safari on iOS requires a user action before sound can play. Tap any button in the app once (for example «Start»), and sound will work for the rest of the session.

Which languages are supported?

The interface is available in Norwegian Bokmål, English, Ukrainian and Arabic. The question bank is in Norwegian and English — if your menu language is Ukrainian or Arabic, you’ll see the question itself in Norwegian.

Is right-to-left (RTL) supported for Arabic?

Yes. When you select Arabic the whole interface mirrors to right-to-left, including the sidebar, buttons and chevron icons.

Where is my data stored?

All data lives in Supabase data centres in the EU. We use TLS for in-transit encryption, bcrypt for passwords, and service-role access is restricted to server code — never the browser.

Which cookies do you use?

By default we only use strictly necessary cookies (authentication, language preference, consent status). Plausible Analytics loads only after you’ve accepted the cookie banner. We don’t track personal data and share nothing with ad networks.

How do I delete my account?

Go to dashboard/account and pick «Delete account». We immediately remove all personal data, answers and progress from the database and from Supabase Auth. The action cannot be undone.
