Folketrygden is Norway’s national insurance scheme, funded through payroll contributions and the state budget. It covers:
- Sick pay.
- Parental benefit and lump-sum grant.
- Unemployment benefits (dagpenger).
- Disability benefits.
- Old-age pension.
- Health-cost subsidies (the frikort system).
You become a member of folketrygden once you are resident in Norway or work for a Norwegian employer. Many entitlements depend on the length of your membership.
