Folketrygden is Norway’s national insurance scheme, funded through payroll contributions and the state budget. It covers:

  • Sick pay.
  • Parental benefit and lump-sum grant.
  • Unemployment benefits (dagpenger).
  • Disability benefits.
  • Old-age pension.
  • Health-cost subsidies (the frikort system).

You become a member of folketrygden once you are resident in Norway or work for a Norwegian employer. Many entitlements depend on the length of your membership.
