Places with a story
Ceavccageađge / Mortensnes

Ceavccageađge / Mortensnes is a protected cultural landscape by Varangerfjorden in Unjárga/Nesseby. Settlement traces, Sámi graves and sacred places reveal how people have lived with the resources of this Arctic coast across thousands of years.
The place12
The area preserves evidence of coastal settlement from prehistory into recent times. A marked path connects visible traces in the landscape, from old dwelling sites to places associated with ritual. The standing Transteinen and the stone labyrinth around it are among the site's distinctive landmarks; the surrounding terrain is itself part of the heritage.
History and local connections2
Riksantikvaren describes human use of the Mortensnes area across roughly 12,000 years. The sequence includes early tent settlements and later houses, burial places and ritual sites. It forms part of the proposed Várjjat Siida cultural landscape, whose documented remains show the relationship between people, hunting, fishing and Arctic nature.
What to look for12
Look for changes in the shoreline terraces and low traces of former buildings. The ancient houses have not survived intact. The operator also presents a reconstructed turf dwelling and an information building. Sámi burial places among the loose stones and sacred places where offerings were made give the walk cultural and spiritual meaning alongside its archaeological value.
Planning a visit1
Follow marked paths to protect archaeological remains that have not been excavated, and do not disturb stones or burial places. The outdoor area can be visited throughout the year, but snow may conceal features from autumn into spring. Ask the operator about seasonal visitor-centre access and guided visits, especially if you want an explanation of the site's history and culture.
