Places with a story
Kväänin institutti – Kvensk institutt

Kväänin institutti – Kvensk institutt in Pyssyjoki/Børselv is a national centre for Kven language and culture. Its distinctive building combines a place for cultural experiences with the continuing work of documenting and strengthening a living language.
The place1
The institute develops and shares knowledge about Kven language and culture and promotes use of the language in society. Its work includes language resources, public information and cultural projects. In Porsanger, this national role is anchored in the local Kven community of Børselv rather than presented as a remote administrative function.
History and local connections12
The institute was established in 2005 and officially opened on 14 June 2007. Architects Odd Østbye and Ingolf Westbø designed its building, completed in 2005. The tall cultural hall recalls a karvas, an overturned local boat, while the office wing takes inspiration from a historical photograph of small houses in Bossekop.
What to look for23
Look for the relationship between the roof line, surrounding mountains and hall interior. Eva Bakkeslett's ceiling artwork Koitto – Gryning adds a Kven artistic voice to the architecture. The sound exhibition Meiän äänet uses voices, everyday sounds and ten short sound narratives to communicate history and ways of life through listening.
Planning a visit23
Check the institute's own pages for exhibition access, events and guided visits before travelling. The building description provides contact details for arranging tours. A visit to the architecture and sound exhibition can be planned together, while seminars or concerts depend on the published programme. Use Pyssyjoki/Børselv when searching for the destination.
