Places with a story
Hamningberg

Hamningberg is an abandoned fishing village at the end of the Varanger scenic route. Preserved nineteenth-century timber houses meet an unusually rugged coastal landscape, giving this place a distinctive architectural and historical character.
The place13
The village lies on the outer Varanger Peninsula in Båtsfjord municipality. Its intact older buildings are unusual in Finnmark, where many settlements are dominated by later reconstruction. The houses stand close to the open coast. The final road approach passes through a fractured rock landscape, making the transition from exposed shore to compact settlement especially striking.
History and local connections12
Several preserved houses use traditional Pomor log construction, connecting the village's architecture with northern coastal building traditions. Hamningberg no longer functions as a permanently inhabited fishing village, but the surviving houses retain evidence of that earlier community. New visitor facilities opened in 2025 were designed to accommodate travel without placing all the pressure on the village and shore.
What to look for12
Walk through the settlement with attention to the timber walls, roof shapes and relationship between houses and the sea. The new rest area's two toilet buildings reinterpret Pomor log construction with timber, aluminium and glass. Sheltered seating areas sit within stone-lined recesses. Their architecture provides a contemporary response to the same exposed conditions visible in the older village.
Planning a visit23
The road between Smelror and Hamningberg closes in winter and may also close temporarily after the seasonal reopening. Check the scenic route's current road information before travelling. The final section is narrow and winding. Use the designated parking and rest area; its toilets close in winter. Respect houses and shore areas, and do not assume that every historic building is open for entry.
