Hjemmeluft is the publicly accessible heart of Alta's World Heritage rock art. Carvings around the bay show hunting, fishing and boat journeys while the landscape explains how people used the prehistoric shoreline.

The place12

Alta Museum identifies Hjemmeluft as the largest of Alta's World Heritage areas and the one prepared for public visits. Paths connect rock-art panels on both sides of the bay. The carvings include animals, people, boats and tools, as well as complex scenes. Their value lies in relationships between the images and the surrounding landscape.

History and local connections12

The rock art was made over several millennia. Land rose after the Ice Age, so surfaces that were once beside the water now stand above the shore. Older carvings occur higher in the landscape. Alta's rock art was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985; Hjemmeluft forms part of that wider protected property.

What to look for1

Follow the prepared walkways and compare reindeer, elk, bears and boat motifs across different panels. Alta Museum describes a three-kilometre path network, connecting some of the panels rather than every known carving. Views over the bay help relate the pictures to former shorelines. Observe the carved surfaces from the paths and avoid stepping onto the panels.

Planning a visit3

Plan the visit through Alta Museum, which provides current opening, tickets and interpretation of the rock art. Check seasonal access before expecting to walk the full outdoor route. Weather and snow affect an open-air archaeological visit. Ask about guided tours, available route sections and mobility requirements, and allow time for both the museum's explanations and the landscape.
