Unjárga/Nesseby surrounds the inner reaches of Varangerfjorden, with small villages along both shores. Birch woodland and marshes near the head of the fjord give way to open uplands, while Sea Sámi identity connects coast and hinterland.
Fishing, small farms and reindeer husbandry form part of a tradition of combining livelihoods through the year. Hunting, berry gathering and fishing for household use also matter: natural resources contribute more than paid employment alone.
