A passed social studies test result does not automatically become unusable because it is old. The UDI and HK-dir pages we checked state no general expiry period. You must still check that the test type, language and certificate meet the requirement for your application now.
How long is the social studies test valid?
The official pages we checked on 1 October 2026 do not state a fixed number of years for which a passed result is valid. HK-dir describes the test certificate as documentation that you took and passed the test. That is not the same as saying that every old certificate meets every new application requirement.
Distinguish between two questions: Is the result documented? And is this particular result accepted for my purpose? That is why a certificate from several years ago should be checked, but not automatically discarded. The guide to permanent residence requirements gives background on the whole application. Here we focus only on an old test result.
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Result: “passed” | A letter saying “not passed” does not document that you met the test requirement. |
| Which test you took | The social studies test and the citizenship test are two different tests. |
| Language of the test | Citizenship has a different language requirement from permanent residence. |
| Name and identity | The certificate must be linked to you. |
| Official test certificate | HK-dir distinguishes between a transcript, My Page and an issued certificate. |
Can an old result be used for permanent residence?
It can if it documents the test UDI requires for you. From 1 September 2025, UDI says applicants between 18 and 67 years old who are subject to the test requirement must have passed an oral Norwegian test at least at A2 level and a social studies test in a language they understand. UDI states no new time limit for the social studies test result on this page. Other conditions and possible exemptions must be assessed separately.
Example: You passed the social studies test in English in 2021 and apply for permanent residence in 2026. The fact that you took the test five years earlier is not in itself a stated reason for expiry. Check that you have documentation showing “passed”, that it was in fact the social studies test, and that English is a language you understand. Then check the other requirements in UDI's personalised application guide. This example is not advance approval.
If the certificate is so old or unclear that you cannot confidently identify the test type or language, ask the test centre for a copy or explanation. Do not automatically register for the test again before clarifying this.
What if you want to apply for Norwegian citizenship?
Here, the language may be decisive, regardless of when you took the test. For applicants covered by the test requirement, UDI requires either a passed citizenship test or a passed social studies test in Norwegian. A social studies test in another language is not enough for this requirement. The oral Norwegian requirement is assessed separately.
Example: You passed the social studies test in Arabic in 2020. The result may be relevant for permanent residence under the language rule that applies there. If you later apply for citizenship and are subject to the test requirement, you must look into taking the social studies test in Norwegian or the citizenship test. It is the language and test type that change the assessment, not just the age of the certificate. Compare the social studies test and the citizenship test before booking a new test.
This article is not about which language you should choose on your first attempt. It helps you use a result you have already achieved correctly. If you are unsure about an older test certificate, ask UDI what documentation is required for your category.
What is on the certificate, and where can you find it?
HK-dir says the test centre sends a test certificate when you pass the social studies test. The regulations say a paper certificate is valid only when signed by two people at the test centre. A transcript sent by email cannot replace the test certificate. Check that you have an issued, readable document.
If you have lost the certificate, contact the place where you took your most recent test and ask for a copy. HK-dir also says that you can view your latest and best results in Vitnemålsportalen and share them securely from there, if you are registered with a national identity number in the test system. HK-dir's regulations say this digital sharing has the same validity as a test certificate issued by the test centre. My Page shows the result but does not let you print a test certificate. If the result is missing in Vitnemålsportalen, the test centre can check your identity information.
A name change, another identity number or several old candidate numbers may make it hard to find the documentation. Ask the test centre to check the registration before assuming that you have to take the test again.
Checklist before submitting your application
- Find the official test certificate or share the result through Vitnemålsportalen.
- Read the test name, result, language and personal details.
- Open UDI's current requirements for permanent residence or citizenship.
- Compare the language and test type with that specific requirement.
- Contact the test centre if the certificate is missing or unclear; contact UDI if you are unsure whether it will be accepted for the application.
SamfunnPrep can help you understand the requirements and find practice material if you need to take a new test. SamfunnPrep does not issue test certificates or assess whether UDI will accept an old result. If you do need to take the test again, you can try SamfunnPrep for free while planning the official test date.
