Samfunnskunnskapsprøven — the Norwegian social studies test — is available in Arabic for everyone taking the test in Norway. You choose your language on the day of the test itself — not when you register. The test is available in 23 languages, and Arabic is one of them. Arabic is also one of only ten languages with audio, so you can have the questions read aloud while you read them. If you are applying for a permanent residence permit, taking the test in Arabic is a simple way to document your knowledge of Norwegian society — without your Norwegian having to be perfect yet.

How to choose Arabic as your test language

You do not need to apply to take the test in Arabic. Register as usual at prove.hkdir.no with BankID or MinID, and choose your test center and date. On test day, you select Arabic in the language menu on the screen before the test starts.

The translations are quality-assured by HK-dir, the agency responsible for the test. Norwegian institution names such as NAV and UDI appear in Norwegian in parentheses in the Arabic version too, so you recognize them from everyday life.

Arabic has audio — use it

Only ten of the test languages offer read-aloud audio, and Arabic is one of them. That means you can hear each question read aloud while you read it on screen. For many people this makes the test both faster and less stressful — especially if you read Arabic less often than you speak it. Try to practice with a similar setup while you prepare, so the format feels familiar on test day.

What the test contains

The content is the same in every language. The test has 38 tasks, you have 60 minutes, and you must answer at least 26 of the 34 scored tasks correctly to pass. The questions cover Norwegian history, politics, health, school, working life, family and laws — the curriculum from the social studies syllabus for adult immigrants.

You can find the official curriculum at samfunnskunnskap.no. If you need a concrete study plan, follow our guide to preparing in three days.

Does the test in Arabic count for residence and citizenship?

Passing samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Arabic meets the knowledge-of-society requirement when you apply for a permanent residence permit. For Norwegian citizenship, separate rules apply: you must pass the test in Norwegian, or take statsborgerprøven (the citizenship test). Always check the requirements for your situation with UDI.
