Samfunnskunnskapsprøven — the Norwegian social studies test — is available in Ukrainian for everyone taking the test in Norway. You choose your language on the day of the test itself — not when you register. The test is available in 23 languages, and Ukrainian is one of them. For Ukrainians planning a future in Norway, taking the test in Ukrainian is a simple way to document your knowledge of Norwegian society — without your Norwegian having to be perfect yet.
How to choose Ukrainian as your test language
You do not need to apply to take the test in Ukrainian. Register as usual at prove.hkdir.no with BankID or MinID, and choose your test center and date. On test day, you select Ukrainian in the language menu on the screen before the test starts.
The translations are quality-assured by HK-dir, the agency responsible for the test. Norwegian institution names such as NAV and UDI appear in Norwegian in parentheses in the Ukrainian version too, so you recognize them from everyday life.
Ukrainian has no audio — you read on screen yourself
Read-aloud audio is only available in ten of the test languages, and Ukrainian is not one of them. That means you read all the questions yourself on screen. This works out fine for the vast majority — but do practice reading questions in a digital format under time pressure before test day. If you have impaired vision or other needs, you can apply to the test center for special accommodation.
What the test contains
The content is the same in every language. The test has 38 tasks, you have 60 minutes, and you must answer at least 26 of the 34 scored tasks correctly to pass. The questions cover Norwegian history, politics, health, school, working life, family and laws — the curriculum from the social studies syllabus for adult immigrants.
You can find the official curriculum at samfunnskunnskap.no. If you need a concrete study plan, follow our guide to preparing in three days.
Does the test in Ukrainian count for residence and citizenship?
Passing samfunnskunnskapsprøven in Ukrainian meets the knowledge-of-society requirement when you apply for a permanent residence permit. If you are a Ukrainian with collective protection and wondering about the road ahead, we have a dedicated guide on permanent residence for Ukrainians.
For Norwegian citizenship, separate rules apply: you must pass the test in Norwegian, or take statsborgerprøven (the citizenship test). Always check the requirements for your situation with UDI.
