A Norwegian tutor online should suit your level and what you want to use Norwegian for. Compare tutor profiles, try a specific learning task and check the payment terms. Preply and Lingu are two verified ways to search, but you must assess each tutor.
What do you want to learn with a private Norwegian tutor?
Choose a tutor experienced in the task you need help with. Conversation practice, workplace Norwegian and writing practice for Norskprøven require different approaches.
Write down one clear goal before searching. ‘I want to explain a fault to a customer’ gives the tutor more information than ‘I want to become fluent’. Also say whether you already attend a course and which languages you understand.
If you plan to take Norskprøven, say which part of the test you need help with. HK-dir, Direktoratet for høyere utdanning og kompetanse, the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills, provides official sample tasks. Ask the tutor to explain how lessons use these task types without promising a particular result.
On SamfunnPrep, you can read a separate guide to preparing for Norskprøven. This article helps you choose the person who will support your learning.
Where can you find a Norwegian tutor online?
You can search on a tutor platform, book through a language school or contact a tutor directly. Choose the route according to how much you want to organise yourself.
| Search route | How you find lessons | What you must check |
|---|---|---|
| Preply | Search profiles for Norwegian lessons | Relevant experience, calendar and subscription |
| Lingu | Find private lessons in the course catalogue | Specific tutor, lesson length and package terms |
| Direct agreement with a tutor | Search by subject, goal and preferred language | Identity, skills, payment and cancellation |
Preply has a directory of Norwegian tutors. You can compare profiles and available times. Read the introduction rather than just the star rating, and ask whether the tutor teaches adults at your level.
Lingu describes individual lessons, with trial lessons or packages booked through the course catalogue. As of 13 October 2026, private Norwegian lessons are listed there. Clarify the lesson format and content of the specific offer before paying.
These are examples of active services, not a recommended ranking. Providers’ descriptions show what you can book; they do not prove that a particular tutor suits you. Read the terms of the service you choose.
What skills should the Norwegian tutor have?
Look for experience with Norwegian as a second language and adult learners. Being a native Norwegian speaker alone does not show that someone can explain grammar or assess a text.
Ask the tutor to describe their education, teaching experience and usual learner groups. For writing practice, find out how feedback is given. For speaking practice, the tutor should show how you get to practise and correct misunderstandings.
Also ask whether the tutor can teach Bokmål if that is the written form you use. Pronunciation and local dialects are another part of the language. Say where you live or work so that practice can relate to conversations you actually encounter.
A profile may display badges for experience or activity on the platform. Still ask for evidence relevant to your goal. A general platform badge is not the same as a specific Norwegian teaching qualification.
What should you ask before the first lesson?
Send the same short questions to a few suitable tutors. This lets you compare replies without buying several large lesson packages.
- Do you have experience with adults at my level?
- How do you assess what I need to work on?
- Can I get feedback on my own texts or practise my workplace situations?
- How much should I practise between lessons?
- Which languages can you use if I do not understand the explanation?
- What does support outside the lesson itself cost?
You can write: ‘I live in Norway and use English at work. I want to explain work tasks in Norwegian. I understand simple conversations but struggle to reply. Could you suggest a first lesson and explain the price, lesson length and terms?’
Do not send your passport, residence decision or other private documents for an ordinary tutor assessment. A short description of your goal and a text you wrote are often enough to start the conversation.
How can you use the trial lesson well?
Use the trial lesson to try an explanation and a specific task. The goal is to assess how you work together, not to get a complete language course in one lesson.
As of 13 October 2026, Preply offers a paid trial lesson of 25 or 50 minutes before you choose a subscription. Check the calendar’s time zone. Other providers may have different lengths, content and payment arrangements.
Bring a situation you want to handle well. You can describe a working day or write a short message. See whether the tutor lets you try, explains a mistake clearly and gives you another chance to use the expression.
Afterwards, you should be able to describe one next step. If you only get a book list or a general suggestion to speak more, ask for a more specific plan before continuing.
What do private lessons really cost?
Compare prices for the same lesson length and content. A price per teaching session is hard to assess until you know the number of minutes and what is included.
Check the currency, possible fees, materials and text correction. Ask whether you are buying individual lessons, a package or a subscription. Also clarify what happens during holidays, absence, a change of tutor and when you stop.
Preply uses subscriptions for further lessons. As of 13 October 2026, cancellation must be done in a web browser. Stopping renewal does not automatically mean that all unused lessons are refunded or remain valid without a deadline. Read the rules that apply to your balance.
Keep the offer and terms you accept. With a tutor you contact directly, both parties should confirm the price and cancellation terms in writing. Start with an amount of teaching you have time for and can afford to use.
How can you follow your progress?
Agree on a small task you can repeat after a few lessons. This lets you assess whether the lessons help with your original goal.
For example, you can describe the same work task again or write a new message of the same type. Ask the tutor to explain what has become clearer and what you should practise next. This is a planning example, not a guarantee of a particular language level.
You can combine private lessons with free language practice and reading materials at the library. Ask your municipality about available services and any entitlements if you are unsure about payment rules.
For samfunnskunnskapsprøven, the social studies test, and statsborgerprøven, the citizenship test, you can use SamfunnPrep’s overview of the tests. Norwegian lessons and social studies practice serve different goals.
