You can search tax lists on Skatteetaten's website and see who opened your information. You must log in, and viewing a person's details is not anonymous. Check the income year: the figures show taxable net income, net wealth and tax, not ordinary annual salary.

What are the tax lists?

Tax lists are public information about income, wealth and tax for a particular income year. Skatteetaten makes the lists available through a dedicated search service.

Skatteetaten, which calculates and administers taxes, explains the content on its Search the tax lists page. The guidance was checked on 4 October 2026. On this date, the page shows tax lists for income year 2024.

You can see details including name, year of birth, postcode, postal town, tax municipality and public tax figures. This is not a copy of the person's tax return. The list also does not show every circumstance explaining their finances.

An income year is the year to which the income and tax relate. The publication year is another year. Always check the year before comparing or discussing figures.

SamfunnPrep's guide to the tax assessment explains your own assessment. Tax lists have a different purpose: they make certain information public.

How to search for a person

Use Skatteetaten's official search service and log in with your own credentials. You must be at least 16 years old to search the lists of individuals.

Start on Skatteetaten's website. Find the tax lists service, choose the correct list and follow the login process. Do not give another website your password or BankID access to obtain help with a search.

Search using the person's name and use available information such as year of birth or residence to distinguish people with the same name. Only open information for the person you actually mean.

A list of search results is different from viewing a person. Only when you open a person and see the tax information does it count as a viewing. This distinction matters for both the usage limit and viewing history.

You can also find business lists in the service. Views in business lists are not visible to the business, and business searches have no limit on the number of views. Follow the guidance for the list you use.

Can others see that you searched?

Yes. When you open a person's tax information, that person can see the viewing in their history. Viewing individuals' details is therefore not anonymous.

Skatteetaten says the history shows who viewed the information. It includes the searcher's name, year of birth, postcode and postal town, as well as the time of the viewing.

A search showing only a results list does not count as viewing each person's tax information. Opening the details is a different situation.

Do not borrow another person's login or ask them to use their access to hide your own identity. Use the service through your own account and understand what is recorded before opening information.

SamfunnPrep's guide to privacy and personal data explains general concepts. Viewing history here forms part of the official tax list system.

How do you see who searched for you?

Log into the tax list service and open the viewing history for your information. There you can see recorded views of your details.

Here, viewing history means who opened your tax information. It is not a list of everything you searched for online, nor a full overview of how the press uses tax lists.

Skatteetaten says the history updates once an hour. A viewing therefore does not necessarily appear immediately. Check the time and update before drawing a conclusion.

The lists show identifying information to help distinguish people with the same name. A record does not explain why someone viewed the information. Nor does it, by itself, prove anything unlawful happened.

If you have questions about information or the service, use Skatteetaten's own contact channels. Do not publish your entire viewing history, including other people's information, to ask for help.

Why does the figure differ from salary?

Net income in the tax list is an amount calculated for tax purposes. It is neither gross annual salary nor the salary arriving in your bank account.

Gross salary is salary before tax deductions. The tax list's net income is based on income and deductions under tax rules. It can therefore be affected by more than your salary from the employer.

Net wealth is also calculated for tax purposes. Assets and debts are valued under tax rules; this is not a complete overview of the market value of what the person owns.

Figure you seeWhat should you not assume?
Net incomeThat it is the person's annual salary before tax
Net wealthThat it is the sale value of everything the person owns
TaxThat this figure alone explains income, deductions or ability to pay

A hypothetical example: Two people with similar salaries can have different deductions or other income. Their net income in the list can therefore differ. Use the figures with their correct names and years, and avoid explaining someone's entire finances from a single line.

What if you cannot find yourself?

Some people are excluded from tax lists. Not finding a name therefore does not automatically mean the search or tax assessment is wrong.

Skatteetaten lists exclusions including people with protected addresses, those aged 17 or younger at the end of the income year, deceased people and certain other groups. The age limit for inclusion is therefore different from the 16-year limit for using the search.

Also check the correct income year, name and list update. Figures and information can change after a new tax assessment, but the service does not necessarily update at the same moment as your own letter.

You cannot choose to opt out of the lists merely because you want to. Statutory exclusions determine who is not listed. Ask Skatteetaten about your circumstances if you believe the information is wrong.

Is there a search limit?

You can view tax information for up to 500 people per calendar month in the lists of individuals. A results list does not count as a person viewing.

Opening a person's tax information counts towards your use of the service. Skatteetaten's page explains how the limit works and where to see an overview of views.

The limit resets at the start of a new calendar month. Do not expect it to run for 30 days from your first search or assume another list automatically gives you additional views of individuals.

When are new tax lists released?

New tax lists are published annually. Find the confirmed date through Skatteetaten and check which income year the publication concerns.

Skatteetaten's news about publication on 3 December 2025 shows an earlier publication. It does not confirm the date of the next list. We therefore give no unconfirmed publication date for 2026 here.

The right to see views of your details is also described in Skatteetaten's handbook on public tax lists. Use the current service page when a new list arrives.

For a practical overview of logins and public services, use SamfunnPrep's first-week checklist. Keep your own tax case separate from the public search and always check the year and terms.
