If you lose your job in Norway, you don't automatically lose your right to stay here. Skilled workers from countries outside the EEA can generally stay for up to six months to find a new job, and EEA citizens have their own and often even stronger rights. The rules in this guide apply as of July 2026.

Your permit is tied to the job type — not the employer

If you have a residence permit as a skilled worker, your permit is tied to a specific type of position — not to one specific employer. This gives you more flexibility than many people think:

  • New job in the same type of position: You don't need to apply for a new residence permit. You only need to notify the police where you live within seven days of starting your new job.
  • New job in a different type of position: Then you must apply for a new residence permit from UDI (Directorate of Immigration) — and you cannot start the new position until the permit is approved.

The regulations are found in the immigration regulations chapter 6. A chef can thus switch from one restaurant to another with just a notification to the police, but needs a new permit to start as a warehouse manager.

Six months to find a new job

If you lose your job — for example due to redundancy or bankruptcy — two important rules apply:

  • Notify the police within seven days after your employment ends. This is an obligation, and it is the police where you live who must receive the notification.
  • You can stay in Norway for up to six months to look for a new job. The requirement is that your residence permit remains valid throughout this period.

Note this important point: the job-seeking period does not extend your permit. If your permit expires in two months, you have two months. To renew your permit, you must meet the requirements again, including having a concrete job offer that meets the salary requirements. If you find a new job in the same type of position, you notify the police — if you find a different type of position, you apply for a new permit first.

The six-month rule applies when you lose your job, for example due to redundancy, bankruptcy, or because a temporary contract is not extended. If you are considering resigning, you should have your new employment contract signed first — that way you keep both your grounds for residence and your right to unemployment benefits without an extended waiting period.

EEA citizens: separate and stronger rules

If you are a citizen of an EU or EEA country, you don't need a residence permit, and you don't need to notify the police or UDI when you become unemployed. Your residence right as a worker can continue — on two conditions: you lost your job involuntarily, and you register as a job seeker with NAV (Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration).

  • Worked less than one year in Norway: You keep your residence right as a job seeker for six months.
  • Worked one year or more: You keep your residence right as long as you are registered with NAV and actively seeking work — with no fixed time limit.
  • After five years of lawful residence you can apply for permanent residence.

If you resign without good reason, these rights generally fall away. Registered unemployment can under certain conditions count toward the five-year period.

Money to live on: unemployment benefits from NAV

Unemployed people who are members of the National Insurance Scheme may be entitled to unemployment benefits — this also applies to foreign nationals with lawful residence. As of July 2026, you must have earned at least 204 824 kroner (1.5 G) in the last twelve months, or at least 409 647 kroner (3 G) in the last 36 months. Apply before your last day of work to avoid unnecessary days without income.

If you are dismissed, there is no extended waiting period. If you resign without reasonable cause, you must wait an additional 18 weeks. The full rules are explained in the guide on unemployment benefits after resignation.

While you receive unemployment benefits, you must send a report card every two weeks and be an active job seeker. This fits well with UDI's requirements: active job seeking is in any case what secures your further residence.

Residence, permanent residence, and family

If you're thinking about a permanent residence permit, the most important thing is to avoid gaps: your period of residence must be continuous with valid permission. Always apply to renew before your old permit expires — then you have the right to continue on the same terms while your application is being processed. Your decision letter will state whether the time with your permit counts toward your residence period.

A period of unemployment does not erase the residence time you have already earned. What creates problems is staying in the country after your permit has expired, or submitting your renewal application too late. Then your residence time can be interrupted, and in the worst case you will have to start earning your residence time again from scratch.

If your family has residence through family immigration, their permits are tied to yours. If you lose your grounds for residence, it will also affect them at the next renewal. Also remember the income requirement: when renewing family permits, you must still be able to support your family, and unemployment benefits count as income in this assessment.

Checklist: what you do in your first week

Many immigrants in Norway have been through the same thing — and most find a new job. Here's how you proceed:

  1. Notify the police within seven days if you have a permit as a skilled worker. EEA citizens skip this step.
  2. Register as a job seeker with NAV the same week, and apply for unemployment benefits before your last day of work.
  3. Check the expiry date on your residence permit, and plan the renewal in good time.
  4. Apply broadly, but in the same type of position if you want to avoid having to apply for a new permit.
  5. Ask for help: your trade union, NAV, and UDI's advisory service answer questions for free.
