Who you notify depends on the change and your residence permit. Address changes are often reported to the National Population Register, job changes may need to be reported to the police, while important new information must be added to your UDI case. Check your decision first. Checked 2 October 2026.
Start with your decision and pending application
Read what your permit was granted for and which conditions are stated in the decision. A skilled worker, a person with family immigration and a student have different conditions. UDI expects you to inform them if your circumstances change in a way that may affect your case. This also applies to a new email address or mobile number. There is no rule that every private change requires a new residence application.
If your application is being processed, find the case number and personal document list in My applications. Write down what changed, when it happened and why it may be relevant. This makes it easier to choose the right channel. How to read a UDI decision shows where to find the basis for residence and any restrictions.
| Change | First place to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| New home address | National Population Register if you are registered; otherwise the police if you are in Norway waiting for UDI | Letters, registration and any police appointment must go to the right place. |
| New email or mobile number | Contact details in your UDI case | You need to receive requests for documents and decisions. |
| New passport or name change | Check the details in your UDI application, passport and the National Population Register | Identity information and documents must match. |
| New job or job loss | Conditions of your work permit; often the police | Some changes require notification, others a new application. |
| Separation or changed family situation | Conditions of your family permit and any pending application | The basis for your permit may have changed. |
New address: who needs to know?
If you are registered as resident in Norway, report your move to the National Population Register at the Norwegian Tax Administration. UDI says it receives your new home address automatically from the Register while you are waiting for a decision. Check that the change has been registered, and update a separate postal address if you use one. The Tax Administration says a move within Norway may be reported no earlier than 31 days before and no later than 8 days after the move.
If you are in Norway but not registered in the National Population Register, UDI says to report your move to the police no later than one week after moving while your application is being processed. If you are abroad, UDI refers you to the embassy or consulate where you submitted the application. A booked police appointment is not moved automatically. The guide to reporting a move covers this separately.
Passport, name and contact details
If you get a new passport while an application is being processed, check whether UDI needs a copy of the new document. Use UDI's service to submit additional documents when the passport is relevant to your pending case, and follow any instructions in the decision. State which old document it replaces. A new passport does not itself extend your residence permit or residence card. A passport, card and permit are different documents.
If your name or date of birth does not match across your passport, the National Population Register and UDI, use the correct process with the authority responsible for that information. Do not enter a “new” name in one application without explaining the discrepancy. Gather evidence of your correct name and resolve the discrepancy with the right authority. Also update the contact channels UDI uses; otherwise an important deadline may pass without you seeing the message.
Work: same type of job or a new basis?
If you have a permit as a skilled worker with an employer in Norway, UDI distinguishes between a new employer in the same type of position and a new type of position. For the same type of position, you normally do not need a new permit, but must notify the police where you live within seven days of starting. For a new type of position, you must apply for a new permit and wait for it to be granted before starting that type of work. If you lose your job, you must also notify the police within seven days; how long you may look for work depends on your permit remaining valid.
These are the rules for this permit type, not for all workers. Seasonal workers, posted workers and other categories may have different requirements when changing employers. Read the article about changing jobs with a skilled worker permit and check your category with UDI. A payslip submitted with an application for permanent residence does not replace a notification required by your work permit.
Family: is the basis still the same?
If you have family immigration as a spouse or cohabitant and the relationship ends, the cohabitation requirement may have changed. Give UDI accurate information and check whether you can apply on an independent basis. There are specific rules, including cases involving abuse and when you have children in Norway. Read about residence after a separation before deciding what to do next.
A new marriage or child does not automatically change your existing permit or give the child the same status. Report births and family information to the right authority, and check the child's own passport, citizenship and residence questions. If you applied using information about a relationship that has now changed, UDI must know before deciding the case. Explain what the change means for that specific application.
Practical template for submitting updated information
I refer to my application for [permit type], DUF/case number [number]. On [date], the following change occurred: [brief and specific description]. The previous information was [information]. The new information is [information]. I am attaching [documents]. Please let me know if you need further documentation or if I must submit a new application.
Use the correct secure channel for personal information and save the receipt. If you are unsure whether a change requires a new application, ask UDI or the police before starting work that your current permit may not cover. SamfunnPrep can help you understand terms about Norwegian authorities and residence in the residence-period tool. The authorities decide what applies in your case.
