Did you fail the social studies test? You can register for another attempt. Wait until you have seen the result, check when the test centre offers the next date, and use your time to work on the topics you actually struggled with. Registering again is no guarantee that you will pass; a clear overview of your mistakes gives you a better plan.
What should you do if you fail the social studies test?
First check your recorded result and personal details. The Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HK-dir) says results normally arrive 2–4 weeks after the test. You can see yours on Min side, and the test centre also sends it to you. HK-dir's information about test results explains where to find it.
If you experienced a technical or other formal error on test day, a different process applies than registering again. HK-dir says you can complain about a formal error that may have affected the result, but not about the academic assessment or the result itself. Send the complaint to the test centre where you took the test within three weeks of the test date. Contact the centre promptly, even if you are still waiting for your result. HK-dir's complaint rules explain the procedure.
| Situation | Next step |
|---|---|
| The result is “failed”, with no error in how the test was conducted | Make a study plan and find a new date at a test centre. |
| You believe a formal error affected the test | Send a specific complaint to the test centre within three weeks of the test date. |
| The result or ID details are missing or look wrong | Contact the test centre and check Min side. |
| Your residence permit will expire soon | Check renewal and application deadlines with the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) immediately. |
When can you register again, and what does it cost?
You can register again when a test centre has published a suitable date. Test dates are set locally. HK-dir does not provide a common national calendar to plan around. In the registration portal, choose a county and test centre. If the centre has no clickable date, contact it directly. HK-dir's registration page explains the process.
If you have both a right and an obligation to receive social studies instruction, you may be entitled to one free test. If you have used it, you usually have to pay for another attempt. Other candidates pay themselves. The municipality sets the price; HK-dir states 500–1 300 kroner as of 1 October 2026. Ask the test centre about the price and whether the municipality should register you. You are not registered until you have chosen a payment method and received confirmation by SMS and email. Registration is binding.
Choose a date that gives you time to change how you study. There is no universal rule that everyone should wait a certain number of weeks. If an application deadline is approaching, check the rules with UDI and the test centre. A scheduled test is not a passing result. Read the full guide to registration and prices.
How can you identify what you need to work on?
Sort your mistakes into subject knowledge, language and test format. The test result itself does not necessarily tell you which specific questions you answered incorrectly. Do not try to recreate or share closed test questions. Instead, use what you remember finding difficult, the public curriculum and new practice questions.
Make a simple error log with four columns:
| Topic | What was difficult? | Source to read | New check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Working life | Confused holiday with leave | Curriculum section on work | Explain the difference without notes |
| Health | Did not know the service mentioned in the question | Curriculum section on health services | Answer a different question on the topic |
| Norwegian word | Misunderstood “plikt” | Your vocabulary list | Explain the word with your own example |
HK-dir divides the curriculum into education, skills and working life, family, health and everyday life, and Norway past and present. The official curriculum and sample test are a good starting point. The sample test helps you practise the format; it does not contain the questions you will get in the exam. Also see common mistakes on the social studies test.
How to change your study routine before the next attempt
Read the explanation behind a wrong answer before taking more tests. Remembering the right option in one quiz is not the same as understanding the rule. Follow this order for each weak topic:
- Read the relevant section of samfunnskunnskap.no.
- Explain the content in your own words, perhaps to another person.
- Answer some new questions on the same topic.
- Write down why the other answers do not fit.
- Test the topic again after a few days without looking at your notes.
The test has 38 questions, but only 34 count; you need at least 26 correct out of the 34 that count. You do not know which four are trial questions. So read and answer every question. The test lasts up to 60 minutes. The format guide describes the rules. Aim to understand the whole curriculum well instead of estimating a safe practice score from the number correct on a commercial test.
On SamfunnPrep, you can use the free practice test to identify patterns in what you do not yet know. SamfunnPrep's questions are written for practice. They are not secret or official exam questions, and a practice score cannot reliably predict your test result. The general preparation guide has a plan you can adapt.
How do you know if you are ready to try again?
You are better prepared when you can explain difficult topics without help and calmly answer new questions. Take the official sample test to get familiar with the screen and question format. Then use a varied practice set with a timer, but review your mistakes, not just the percentage.
Before choosing a test date, check this list:
- I can explain the main points from all three curriculum areas.
- I understand why I answered previous practice questions incorrectly.
- I have practised new questions, not just repeated the same set.
- I can read questions and answer options in my chosen test language.
- I have checked the test centre, ID requirements, payment and time to receive the result.
If you will use the result for permanent residence, also check the Norwegian language and social studies requirements with SamfunnPrep. The rules and sources here were checked 1 October 2026. Once you have a realistic date, you can try SamfunnPrep for free as a supplement to the public curriculum.
