When AvtaleGiro has not been deducted, check the payment before paying manually. Look for insufficient funds, a low payment limit, a stopped payment or the wrong account. Find out whether the bank will try again, so you avoid paying the same bill twice.
Is the bill paid, scheduled or stopped?
Look at both the payment overview and account transactions. An agreement for automatic payment is not proof that this bill has been paid.
AvtaleGiro gives the bank permission to pay specific bills from your account. The due date is the date the bill must be paid. The payment limit sets a maximum for what can be deducted through the agreement.
SamfunnPrep's guide to eFaktura and AvtaleGiro explains how to set up the payments. Here, you resolve a debit that is missing or has stopped.
Find the recipient, amount and due date. See whether the payment is listed as completed, scheduled for a future date or stopped. Menu names vary between banks. Seeing an invoice copy does not mean the money has left your account either.
Why is AvtaleGiro not deducted?
Common reasons are insufficient funds in the correct account, a low payment limit, a stopped payment or a deleted agreement. A new agreement may also be too recent to cover the first bill.
DNB's AvtaleGiro guidance describes these problems. The guidance was checked on 4 October 2026. Read the error message in your own bank before changing anything.
| What you find | What should you check? | Who can help? |
|---|---|---|
| Insufficient funds | Available funds in the account being debited | The bank about payment status |
| The bill exceeds the limit | The payment limit and the period it covers | The bank about changing it |
| The payment is stopped | Whether only this debit is stopped | The bank about reactivating it |
| The agreement is missing or new | An active agreement, KID and the first bill | The bank and payment recipient |
| The money is in another account | Which account the agreement actually debits | The bank about changing accounts |
Available funds means money you can use. Having enough in your savings account does not help if AvtaleGiro is to be deducted from a different account.
The payment limit may apply to the whole month
Check whether the limit applies to the total for a month, rather than just one bill. Two ordinary debits may then lead to a stopped payment even when each one is below the limit.
SpareBank 1 explains the maximum amount as the highest total per calendar month. The period does not run from a date of your choice to the same date in the next month.
A hypothetical example: the limit is 1 500 kroner. Two debits of 1 000 kroner fall in the same calendar month. Their total is 2 000 kroner. Each debit is below the limit, but the total is higher. The bank may therefore stop the last debit.
Check which period your agreement uses. Gjensidige's payment guidance also shows that debits may move between months because of a weekend or public holiday. A higher monthly payment may also result from an annual price being divided over fewer months. Check the invoice before increasing the limit.
Is adding money to the account enough?
Transferring money into the account resolves insufficient funds, but does not guarantee that a stopped debit will be paid. Ask the bank whether this payment will be tried again.
DNB's AvtaleGiro terms, clause 8, say that, if funds are insufficient, the bank can either reject the payment immediately or try during the following four business days. These are DNB's terms, rather than a guarantee of further attempts at every bank.
If you also pay manually, another automatic debit could cause a double payment. First clarify whether the debit should be reactivated, stopped or paid in another way. Ask for a specific solution for the bill concerned.
If you have increased the payment limit, also check the stopped payment. A changed limit and a completed payment are two different things.
A new agreement or bank: check the first bill
Pay in the usual way until you see that the bill concerned is going through AvtaleGiro. Confirmation that an agreement has been created does not mean an invoice already sent has been paid.
DNB asks customers to pay as usual until the bill appears automatically in the payment overview. The setup time may vary. Ask the bank or recipient which bill the new agreement will actually cover.
When changing banks, check both the old and new bank. See which account will be debited, whether the agreement has moved or needs to be created again, and whether a debit is still scheduled at the old bank.
Payment recipients may have their own procedures. Follow the guidance from the party you need to pay, and do not set up several parallel agreements without checking what is already active.
eFaktura does not always mean automatic payment
An eFaktura is a digital bill. You usually need to approve it, unless it forms part of an active combination with automatic payment.
DNB offers AvtaleGiro combined with eFaktura when the recipient supports it. You can then view the bill digitally while it is paid automatically.
Lånekassen, however, does not offer the combination. There, you must choose either eFaktura or AvtaleGiro. Lånekassen is the state scheme for student loans and grants. This difference shows why you must check the agreement with each recipient.
Do not approve the same bill in several apps just because it appears in several places. Check the payment status and which arrangement will carry out the payment.
How to resolve one unpaid bill
Start with the specific bill and get confirmation of how it should be paid. Then correct the agreement for future debits.
- Note the recipient, amount, KID and due date.
- Check completed and scheduled payments.
- Find the reason the payment stopped in your bank.
- Clarify whether another automatic attempt will occur.
- Agree on the correct payment method with the bank or recipient.
- Save the receipt and check that the bill is registered as paid.
You can write: “AvtaleGiro for [bill] was not deducted on [date]. Will this debit be tried again, or do I need to pay manually? I want to avoid paying twice.”
At Lånekassen, unpaid bills are included in the next bill together with a reminder fee. This is that recipient's procedure. Do not assume all businesses combine bills in the same way. If you have received a reminder, compare it with your payments and contact the recipient. SamfunnPrep's guide to debt collection demands explains further steps.
Prevent the next stopped payment while keeping control
Check the account and payment limit after a price change or a bank change. Look for upcoming debits and set aside enough money in the correct account.
Choose a limit that suits your agreement. It is a payment maximum, not proof that every bill is correct. If the amount is wrong, contact the recipient about the invoice. A permanent change to the payment date must also be agreed with the recipient.
Stopping AvtaleGiro does not, by itself, resolve a disagreement about the bill. Ask for written clarification if the bill is wrong or you need a different payment arrangement.
