Pomormuseet, Brodtkorbsjåene brings the history of Norwegian-Russian coastal trade into surviving warehouses in Vardø. The timber buildings, old inscriptions and nesting seabirds make the setting as memorable as the museum's subject.

The place1

Brodtkorbsjåene stands at Kaigata 1 in central Vardø. These protected waterfront buildings served the Brodtkorb trading firm's production and storage activities. They were built with substantial Russian timber and broad Siberian larch boards. The museum describes the ensemble as Finnmark's only surviving wharf setting that directly documents the Pomors' work.

History and local connections12

The buildings were erected between 1840 and 1900. Russian Pomors worked here each summer until 1917, within a trading network that connected northern Norway with Russia's northern coast. The warehouses survived the Second World War and remain recognisable in older photographs of Vardø. The Pomor museum presents this commercial history within the place where it happened.

What to look for12

Look for Russian inscriptions cut into the walls or marked in tar. These traces bring individual workers into the larger trading story. Kittiwakes nest on the warehouse walls, making birds part of the present-day setting. The exhibition was developed with the Malye Karely museum in Arkhangelsk, connecting the Norwegian side of the trade with museum knowledge from northern Russia.

Planning a visit12

Varanger museum states that the buildings' exteriors can be viewed throughout the year. Interior exhibition visits follow separate opening arrangements, so contact the Vardø department before travelling specifically for the museum. Observe the wharf buildings from suitable public areas, leave historic inscriptions untouched and keep your distance from nesting birds. The museum address is Kaigata 1; the administration's school-building address is a different location.
