Foldalbruket in Kjøllefjord preserves a working environment from Finnmark's postwar fishing industry. Quays, fish-processing buildings and exhibitions show how a coastal community rebuilt its livelihood after wartime destruction.

The place12

This former fish-processing complex is now a coastal museum in Lebesby. Its surviving buildings present the reconstruction period, rather than a recreated medieval fishing village. The museum connects equipment and workspaces with stories from Foldalbruket and Kjøllefjord. The waterside setting makes the link between the fishing boats, quays and shore-based processing easy to understand.

History and local connections3

Nils Andreas Foldal developed the business before the Second World War. The complex was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt between 1946 and 1952. Russian driftwood collected along the coast provided important building material during the shortage. Fishing operations eventually ended in 1983. Local preservation work followed, and Kjøllefjord kystlag bought the complex in 1994, when it also gained heritage protection.

What to look for23

A guided visit follows a characteristic fish-processing complex of the reconstruction years and explains traditional tools, work and everyday coastal life. The main exhibition tells the story of Foldalbruket and Kjøllefjord, with a wider historical gallery. Notice how substantial storage spaces and the quay supported a business that depended on both local catches and distant customers.

Planning a visit12

The visitor address is Strandvegen 41 in Kjøllefjord. The museum publishes seasonal visiting information and offers accommodation during part of the year. Check the current opening period, guided-tour availability and any accommodation booking directly with the operator. Historic stairs, quays and different building levels can affect a visit, so discuss access requirements with staff in advance.
