Skibotn markedsplass preserves a meeting place for Sámi, Kven and Norwegian communities. Trade across the northern borderlands connected coastal fish, inland products, languages and religious ideas in Storfjord.

The place12

Two original trading huts survive alongside two reconstructions at Nord-Troms Museum's market complex. Exhibitions use photographs, objects, text and sound to evoke market life. The location near Lyngenfjorden made Skibotn a meeting place for people from the coast and inland, rather than a market serving only one village or nationality.

History and local connections1

The market is mentioned in written sources from 1571 and reached particular importance in the nineteenth century. Traders came from Tornedalen alongside reindeer-herding Sámi and local coastal communities. Markets were held in November and after New Year. Competition from improved transport and changing border trade reduced their importance; the last historic market took place in 1955.

What to look for12

The surviving huts help show the modest spaces behind a large trading network. A smithy and a traditional lever well were added to the museum complex in 2003. The market also helped spread the Lutheran revival led by Lars Levi Læstadius; religious gatherings continued after commercial markets ended. Notice the distinction between original buildings and later reconstructions.

Planning a visit1

The museum complex is approximately two kilometres north of the E6–E8 junction. Consult Nord-Troms Museum for current exhibitions, guided visits and the cultural programme. Interior access and temporary displays depend on the museum's arrangements. Give time to the outdoor buildings as well as the exhibits, and ask staff about access requirements before travelling with a group.
