Dalstuene preserves the cabins used by forest workers in Kvænangen. Three small log buildings, joined into one complex, connect Kven building traditions with the use of woodland resources and working horses.

The place1

Also known as Skogstuene, the complex lies inside the Kvænangsbotn protected landscape. The cabins are Gammelstua, Stallen and Nystua. They provided accommodation during work in the surrounding forests and could also shelter horses or store their fodder and equipment. The joined buildings show an economical way of combining separate log structures.

History and local connections1

Gammelstua was first built in the late nineteenth century; the other cabins followed in the early twentieth century. Cabins were moved as forest work shifted between places. The three were gathered here after the Second World War and joined during restoration between 1982 and 1985. Nord-Troms Museum now manages the buildings, which belong to Statskog.

What to look for1

Notice the timber connections between the log cabins and the different uses of each part. The museum relates this construction method to Kven traditions also found in Tornedalen. Both Gammelstua and Stallen served as stables at times, while Nystua was only a dwelling. The modest rooms make the seasonal working life tangible.

Planning a visit1

Reaching Dalstuene requires a walk of approximately three and a half kilometres from the car park along a cultural trail. Plan the return journey and check weather and path conditions. The museum describes an open central part and bookable accommodation in two cabins. Confirm rental arrangements and key collection directly before expecting an overnight stay.
