The place1

Gamslett is Nord-Troms Museum's main museum complex in Lyngen. Its buildings and objects present the traditional combination of seasonal fishing, local fishing, agriculture and harvesting from surrounding land. The older farm buildings include the dwelling, stable, low barn, storehouse and boathouse. The garden preserves plants and trees traditionally grown in the area.

History and local connections1

The farm complex dates to the eighteenth century, while written evidence records people in the surrounding area in 1569 and permanent settlement in 1610. Fishing-farming remained widespread in northern Troms into the mid-twentieth century. Men often travelled for seasonal fishing; women prepared supplies and carried substantial responsibility for animals, cultivation and the household while they were away.

What to look for1

Compare the boathouse with the farm's inland working buildings rather than seeing sea and land as separate economies. The object collection explains the equipment used to make this combination possible. An exhibition opened in the service building in 2021 tells the stories of people who lived on the farm, adding individual lives to the surviving structures.

Planning a visit1

The farm lies beside Ullsfjorden, approximately half a kilometre north of the Svensby ferry landing. Use Nord-Troms Museum's page for the location and current visiting information. Check the ferry timetable separately if arriving across the fjord, and contact the museum about guided visits, building access and any requirements for moving around the historic farm.
