Fossmotunet tells the story of families who moved from Østerdalen and Gudbrandsdalen to Målselv. Original farm buildings and relocated houses show how those traditions took root in the northern valley.

The place1

The museum farm lies near Bardufossen. It explores the building customs, dialect and musical traditions brought north from the late eighteenth century. Fossmostua and the well house belonged to the original farm. Other buildings were moved here from different parts of the municipality, creating a collection of local working and domestic environments.

History and local connections1

Ole Johnsen and Ingeborg Olsdatter received permission to establish the Fossmo farm in 1822. Their families had come from southern inland districts. Fossmostua was dismantled and rebuilt in 1872 with two full storeys. It remained a family home until 1959. The museum farm opened in 1963 and later expanded through relocated buildings.

What to look for1

The collection includes a smithy, a granary, a cooperative shop and a schoolhouse, as well as the large Sandeggen barn. Each represents a different part of valley life. The smithy belonged to Jon Stengrimsen, whose skills led to training in England. Comparing these buildings helps connect farming with education, craft and trade.

Planning a visit1

The museum address is Fossmoveien 451. Midt-Troms Museum offers group and school visits by arrangement between May and September. Fossmostua is undergoing extensive restoration, so confirm which buildings and exhibitions can be visited. Ask staff about access needs and the current programme before arranging an indoor visit or a group outing.
