Målselv centres on a broad river valley with pine forests, farms and extensive agricultural land. From fjord arms in the west, the municipality reaches far inland towards Dividalen and the Swedish border, contrasting settled valleys with high mountains.
Bardufoss and Skjold make the armed forces a major part of working life, while the airport connects Midt-Troms with the rest of Norway. There are several centres: Moen houses the administration, and Andselv, Andslimoen and Heggelia form a wider built-up area.
