Places with a story
Minnelunden i Gratangsbotn

Minnelunden i Gratangsbotn is a place of remembrance for the fighting in Gratangen during 1940. Several monuments bring military losses and individual local lives into the same quiet setting.
The place12
The memorial grove commemorates the battles connected with the Norwegian campaign and the fighting around Narvik. It contains monuments to the Trønderbataljonen and Altabataljonen, as well as individuals. The place links the wartime landscape of Gratangsbotn with the later work of veterans and local people to preserve its history.
History and local connections12
King Olav V inaugurated the grove on 27 May 1990, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the battles. On 25 April 1940 the Trønderbataljonen suffered severe losses during a German attack in Gratangsbotn. The battalion's veterans initiated the memorial project. Gratangen municipality is responsible for the memorial and publishes the historical information on its signs.
What to look for12
Read the separate monuments rather than treating the grove as a single battlefield marker. Captain Nyquist is commemorated alongside the military units. Another monument remembers Sverre Lie, a teacher and sports-club founder who died serving as a courier. A further stone records nine people from Gratangen who fell during the fighting and war years.
Planning a visit1
The municipality's information page provides the historical text for the grove and other war monuments. Reading it before arriving helps distinguish the events and people remembered on each stone. Treat the area as a memorial, allow time for quiet reflection and follow on-site signs. Check local conditions when planning an outdoor visit during winter.
