Jens Bing Dons and Ingeborg Anna Normann Dons established the trading post in 1794. Jens received an innkeeper's licence in 1795. Trade and coastal shipping made Hamnvik a regional centre; later generations also handled postal and steamship services. Its dominant regional position declined as Harstad grew during the twentieth century.
