Gratangen is a chain of small communities along a long, narrow fjord, with Årstein at its constriction and Gratangsbotn at the head. Mountains limit farmland, and boathouses, wharves and farmyards reveal the tradition of combining smallholdings with work at sea.
Aquaculture and marine expertise continue the connection with the sea in new forms. The North Norwegian Ship Preservation Centre makes restoring historic vessels a specialised workplace in an otherwise small, dispersed municipality.
