Places with a story
Várdobáiki, Evenskjer

Várdobáiki, Evenskjer is a Sámi cultural centre in Tjeldsund. Museum displays, art, language work and community activities connect the region's history with Sámi life today.
The place1
Várdobáiki museum cares for Sámi cultural heritage in southern Troms and northern Nordland. Its work includes the traditions of inland Sámi communities, reindeer herding and coastal Sámi communities. The permanent exhibition Hilla – min muitalusak presents this history from a Sámi perspective, moving from early traces in the landscape to the present.
History and local connections2
The cultural centre reused the former shopping centre in Evenskjer. Its public spaces were redesigned by Code arkitektur and completed in 2020. The adaptation gave an existing village building a new role as a meeting place. Language, culture and museum work share the centre, making heritage part of continuing community activity.
What to look for2
Red, yellow and green wooden slats on the black exterior refer to colours in the local gákti. Inside, the artwork Guovlo combines reindeer leather, wool felt and embroidery with tin thread. The sculpture Sola uses stone and metal. Together with the museum and gallery, these works make Sámi creative practice visible in the building itself.
Planning a visit3
The centre's address is Skånlandsveien 78 in Evenskjer. Check the museum's current opening page and exhibition programme before visiting; public holidays can affect access. The operator asks visitors to park behind the building, opposite Tjeldsund vekst. Contact the centre to arrange a group visit and clarify accessibility needs.
