Places with a story
Loshavn
Loshavn is a sheltered coastal settlement on the eastern side of Lista, within Farsund municipality. Its closely grouped houses preserve the story of pilots and privateering, when a small harbour could connect local families with wider maritime conflicts and trade.
The place2
Agder county's heritage account places the development of Loshavn's buildings after 1720. Many residents were pilots, and the harbour's position made it convenient to reach the open sea. The white houses form a historic environment whose significance comes from both maritime work and the relationships between homes and landing places.
History and local connections2
During the Napoleonic Wars, ships received government licences to capture enemy vessels. Captured ships and cargo were judged through prize courts before sale, with proceeds divided between owners and crews. Loshavn participated in this privateering economy, which helps explain why some local houses were unusually substantial.
What to look for2
Kaperhuset, built in 1812 by privateering captain Tønnes Tønnesen, is a clear example. The county highlights its size and green door. Also known as Sundtehuset, it received legal heritage protection in 1970. Observing such details connects the picturesque harbour with the more complicated history of wartime wealth.
Planning a visit21
Consult the county's local heritage account and linked interpretation map when planning a walk. The ministry's conservation material also explains why the settlement's wider environment matters. These houses include private properties: enjoy the harbour and visible exteriors respectfully, and verify any organised visit separately rather than assuming that protected buildings are open museums.
