Christiansholm festning stands beside Kristiansand's waterfront, where a fortified harbour island became a visible part of the modern city. Its walls, cannon positions and sea outlook connect an urban walk with the history of coastal defence.

The place2

The municipality describes an enclosed rampart with eight deactivated bronze cannons dating from 1666 to 1788. Inside the fortress are spaces associated with command, powder storage and imprisonment. The surrounding Tresse area, once used for military drills, now places the former defence works within a public waterfront setting.

History and local connections2

Construction took place from 1666 to 1672 on an island in the harbour, initially linked to the shore by a long footbridge. Kristiansand municipality took over the fortress from the state in 1951, accepting responsibility for maintaining it as a historic monument. Its present use includes hired events and gatherings.

What to look for12

From the exterior, notice how the fortified enclosure faces the coastal approach while sitting close to the city centre. The cannon positions help explain its defensive purpose. A permanent exhibition exists on the ground floor, but its presence must be understood alongside the building's event use rather than as a promise of ordinary museum admission.

Planning a visit1

The municipality explicitly states that the fortress building is not open for general public visits. The outdoor area has seasonal public access; consult the current municipal visitor page for dates and times before going. Interior access depends on an organised event or hire arrangement, so plan a waterfront visit accordingly.
