Places with a story
Flåt gruver
Flåt gruver near Evje is a former nickel-mining landscape whose surface remains reveal a much larger underground industry. The municipality's interpretation connects waste heaps, shaft locations and processing routes with the workers who made mining an important local livelihood.
The place1
The place includes an older lower mine and the larger upper mine. Ore was transported to the works at Fennefossen, where it was smelted before further treatment in Kristiansand. Reading these connections helps distinguish extraction from processing: the mine was one part of an industrial chain extending beyond the hillside.
History and local connections1
A former copper mine became a nickel mine in 1872. Production continued in several periods until 1946. The municipality records up to three hundred and fifty workers at its peak and nineteen deaths during operation, placing the physical remains within a history of demanding and hazardous labour.
What to look for12
The upper mine's vertical shaft, Loddsynken, reached a depth of four hundred and twenty-two metres. The workings are now flooded, so their scale must be understood through surface remains and interpretation rather than an underground visit. QR codes at locations in the area link to the stories formerly presented on signs.
Planning a visit1
Use Evje og Hornnes municipality's pages for the lower and upper mine areas when planning an outdoor visit. Follow established routes and on-place barriers, and leave shafts and industrial structures undisturbed. The flooded workings are a historical subject, not a visitor route; consult local guidance about current conditions in the surface area.
