Places with a story
Krøderbanen

Krøderbanen links Krøderen with Vikersund through a preserved railway landscape. In Krødsherad, the station and heritage trains explain how rail transport connected the inland lake system with the wider markets and waterways of eastern Norway.
About the place1
The railway was developed to move goods as well as passengers. Timber and agricultural products formed important traffic, and the lake at Krøderen connected with steamship transport farther inland. The line therefore helps explain the economic relationship between farms, forests, water routes and rail.
History and local connections12
Krøderbanen opened in 1872 as a narrow-gauge railway and converted to standard gauge in 1909. Regular NSB operation ended in 1985. Since then, Norsk Jernbaneklubb and Stiftelsen Krøderbanen have maintained the line as a museum railway, keeping rolling stock and installations in a historically coherent setting.
What to look for2
At Krøderen station, look for the surviving installations associated with steam operation. A heritage train journey adds the movement and scale that stationary displays cannot provide. Restoration and maintenance are also part of the railway's present work, connecting traditional technical skills with the preservation of transport history.
Plan your visit2
Use the official timetable and ticket information to plan a train trip. The operator reports that the ordinary 2026 summer season has ended, with separate events later in the year. A station visit does not guarantee a train departure, so check the date-specific programme before travelling.
