Places with a story
Gol bygdemuseum

Gol Bygdemuseum occupies the old Skaga farm on the hillside above Gol. Its buildings and open farmyard make the working life of Hallingdal tangible, combining an original local farm with structures brought here to explain different rural activities.
About the place1
The museum preserves a main house, storage buildings, barn, stables and cookhouse from the farm, alongside later additions including a mill, mountain dairy and schoolhouse. These buildings show how domestic life, animal husbandry, food processing and education required different spaces within a relatively small rural community.
History and local connections1
The last farmer sold Skaga to Hallingdal Høgskulelag, which established a folk high school here in 1958. The old farmstead became a museum and the collection subsequently expanded. Most buildings date from the nineteenth century, while the storage loft reaches back to 1750, giving the site several distinct historical layers.
What to look for1
Follow the small path between the museum's two adjoining areas and compare the farm buildings with the mountain dairy and school. A guided visit provides access to interiors and the objects associated with everyday work. The sloping site also explains the close relationship between farm buildings and the surrounding terrain.
Plan your visit1
Check Hallingdal Museum for seasonal guided opening or arrange a group visit. The operator permits outdoor visits outside opening hours, but interior access depends on the museum's arrangements. There is a small parking area reached by a narrow gravel road; the uphill walk from central Gol takes about thirty minutes. The site is unsuitable for wheelchair users.
