About the place1

The church's four arms meet below a roof turret, with the chancel in the eastern arm and galleries in the west. This plan helps bring a congregation around the central space. The building is recorded as a protected church in the specialist account, reflecting its architectural and artistic importance.

History and local connections1

The earlier church burned after a lightning strike in 1684, and the present church was erected in 1686. Restoration in 1859–1861 changed benches, galleries and other details. Later work added stained glass by Borgar Hauglid and restored historic furnishings, so the room includes several periods of use.

What to look for1

The altarpiece and pulpit were carved by Johannes Skråstad in 1686. Look at their figures and layered composition as examples of baroque church art rather than generic decoration. A burial chamber beneath the chancel also connects the building with its original owner, Anders Simonsen, and his family.

Plan your visit2

Ask Gjerdrum parish about worship and visiting times inside the church. Its historical brochure or a guided tour can explain the old furnishings and carvings. Plan a visit around religious ceremonies and follow instructions for protecting the historic objects and decorated surfaces.
