Places with a story
Gamlebrua i Vestnes

Gamle brua i Vestnes is both a crossing over Vestnesstraumen and a familiar symbol of the municipality. Its small scale makes it easy to overlook, but the bridge links local transport history with the waterfront routes and civic identity of Vestnes.
The place1
The bridge stands where the tidal channel separates parts of the settlement. The regional walking guide describes an approach along Gamlebrubakken, a road also remembered locally as Naustbakken. Visiting the bridge within this network of streets helps place it in the everyday movement between homes, landing places and the shore.
History and local connections32
A memorial stone at the northern end bears an inscription naming Wesnes bridge and the year 1844. The bridge also appears in Vestnes's mayoral chain, designed by Jarle Skuseth and introduced in 1979. The municipality explains that its image serves as a connecting motif above the municipal coat of arms.
What to look for23
Look at the relationship between the old crossing, the moving water and the newer routes through the settlement. The bridge's role in the mayoral chain shows that useful infrastructure can also become a shared local emblem. Reading the dated stone alongside this later use connects a nineteenth-century crossing with twentieth-century civic representation.
Planning a visit1
Morotur's Hagnesrunden guide describes a short detour down Gamlebrubakken to reach the bridge. Consult that route and municipal information for a suitable approach. The bridge is part of an outdoor town walk, so check local conditions rather than expecting an indoor attraction with a ticket desk or regular guided opening.
