Places with a story
Vitenfabrikken

Vitenfabrikken combines a science centre with Sandnes city and industrial history. Its interactive exhibitions invite visitors to experiment, while an authentic oat mill anchors contemporary learning in the town's working past.
The place2
As part of Jærmuseet, the centre connects science, mathematics and technology with regional industry. Its approach encourages play and investigation across several floors. The history collections include pottery and bicycles, products that make the relationship between local manufacturing and everyday life particularly tangible.
History and local connections12
An architectural competition launched in 2003 selected Askim og Lantto's design in 2004. The resulting modern building includes exhibition space and a planetarium. Within the museum complex, Krossens havremølle preserves a different industrial chapter: the oat mill dates from 1912, with machinery left as it stood when production stopped in 1988.
What to look for3
Abelloftet is named after mathematician Niels Henrik Abel and contains more than 50 mathematical experiments and installations. Mirrors, geometric puzzles and kaleidoscopes offer different ways into the subject. The planetarium adds an astronomical perspective, while the historic mill helps place machines and energy in a local context.
Planning a visit4
Use Vitenfabrikken's practical-information page to plan tickets and the day's programme. Planetarium shows have limited seating, and some exhibition areas can be used for teaching. Ask reception which activities and screenings are available during your visit; a science-centre ticket alone does not guarantee a particular show time.
