Places with a story
Egersund Fayancemuseum

Egersund Fayancemuseum tells the story of the pottery that helped shape Egersund in Eigersund municipality. Everyday plates, decorated tableware and the factory archive connect a familiar household material with the town's industrial past.
The place1
The museum belongs to Dalane Folkemuseum and concentrates on products from Egersund Fayancefabrik. Its displays make changes in design and fashion visible through objects made for both ordinary meals and special occasions. The collection also explains the factory's place in the working life of the town.
History and local connections1
Johan Feyer founded Egersunds Potteri in 1847 after learning pottery in Newcastle upon Tyne. Production continued until 1979. When the factory closed, Dalane Folkemuseum took responsibility for its archive and collection of historic items; these became the basis of the museum established in 1986.
What to look for1
Look closely at shapes and decoration rather than treating the ceramics as a single unchanging tradition. The museum's accompanying material explains shaping clay, applying glaze, firing, casting and factory marks. These subjects show how raw material became recognizable products and how a local enterprise supplied Norwegian households.
Planning a visit1
Since 2010 the museum has been located in premises at Fabrikkgaten 2 on the former factory grounds. The entrance is on the second floor of Alti Eikunda, reached by stairs or lift at the southwestern end. Check the museum's own page for current opening hours, exhibitions and guided visits.
