To cancel a digital subscription, find who collects the payment: Apple, Google Play or the service itself. Deleting the app does not necessarily stop the subscription. Complete cancellation through the correct channel and keep confirmation showing the end date.
Find who collects the payment
Start with the receipt for the latest payment. The service you use does not always have the same name as the business managing the subscription.
A subscription is an agreement for a service that continues over time. Payment may renew automatically. The billing provider collects the payment and usually has the system where you cancel.
Search your email for the service name, amount or words such as “receipt”, “kvittering” and “subscription”. Compare the date and amount with your bank statement. You may have several subscriptions with the same provider.
| The receipt shows | Where should you start? | What must you check? |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | Subscriptions on the Apple Account | That it is the account shown on the receipt |
| Google Play | Subscriptions on the Google Account | That you are logged into the correct account |
| The service itself | The service's own website or customer service | The agreement and how you started the subscription |
Another payment method may have its own channel. Do not assume every subscription on an iPhone is billed by Apple or every Android app is billed by Google.
How do you cancel through Apple?
An Apple subscription must be cancelled through the Apple Account holding the subscription. Use the receipt to find the correct account before looking in settings.
On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name and choose Subscriptions. Select the subscription, tap the cancellation option and follow any final steps.
Apple's guidance on cancelling subscriptions also describes other devices and online cancellation. The guidance was checked on 4 October 2026. Menu names may change, so use the current help page if your screen looks different.
If there is no cancellation button or an expiry message appears in red text, Apple says the subscription has already been cancelled. Still check the date and that you are looking at the correct service.
If you cannot find the subscription, check which Apple Account the receipt concerns. If another business is the billing provider, contact that business.
How do you cancel in Google Play?
In Google Play, select the relevant subscription on the correct Google Account and complete cancellation. Uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription.
Open the subscriptions overview in Google Play. Check the account if the list is empty. Select the service, choose Cancel subscription or the corresponding Norwegian menu option, and follow the instructions until you receive confirmation.
Google's cancellation guidance explains both the app and browser. It says you can normally use the service during the period already paid for. Cancellation therefore does not always mean access disappears that day.
An empty subscription list does not prove you are not paying. The subscription may be on another Google Account or purchased directly from the provider.
Also check whether your agreement involves several agreed payments. Stopping renewal does not automatically remove amounts you are already obliged to pay.
When the service bills you directly
For direct billing, cancel with the provider, usually through your account on its website. Follow the agreement and keep proof that you sent the cancellation.
Look for “subscription”, “membership”, “billing” or “manage plan”. Some services distinguish between cancelling the subscription and deleting the user account. Read the message before confirming.
Forbrukerrådet, which advises consumers, describes rights for streaming services and digital content. For ongoing digital agreements, cancellation must be possible easily and with reasonable notice.
If you cannot find the option, write to the provider's known customer service. Identify the agreement you are cancelling and ask for written confirmation and an end date. Do not send your card number to a random address.
SamfunnPrep's guide to eFaktura and AvtaleGiro explains payments. Stopping a payment is not, by itself, the same as ending the agreement.
Free trial periods and binding periods
Check when the trial becomes paid and whether the agreement has a binding period. Set a reminder before the relevant deadline if you do not want to continue.
Apple says a trial subscription must be cancelled at least one day before the trial expires if you do not want to renew. Use Apple's guidance and your actual end date.
A trial period provides access for a limited time, often without payment initially. It can renew automatically. A binding period means the agreement binds you for an agreed period. Both must be assessed against the terms.
Forbrukerrådet explains cancellation and binding rules for digital services. There are limits to what the provider can agree. Ask for a specific explanation if you believe the binding period is unreasonable or was not clearly disclosed.
For ongoing digital agreements without a binding period, Forbrukerrådet describes a right to a refund for the remaining agreement period when you cancel, including where you prepaid. This is different from a refund for access already used. Ask the provider to calculate the amount to be refunded.
Do not assume cancellation automatically refunds earlier payments. Access already delivered, a withdrawal deadline and any refund claim are separate questions. This also applies to subscriptions with an agreed payment plan.
This guide concerns digital app and content agreements. Mobile and internet agreements have different practical steps, especially when changing providers.
Keep proof of cancellation
Save confirmation and the end date before closing the page. You can then document both which subscription you ended and when it should stop.
A simple folder can contain:
- The receipt for the latest payment.
- The account and service names.
- A screenshot or email confirming cancellation.
- Your cancellation date and the final day of access.
- Any messages from customer service.
A hypothetical example: You cancel an app on 10 October and confirmation says access lasts until 2 November. This shows renewal has stopped, even though the app still works. Use the dates in your own confirmation.
If the screen only asks why you want to cancel, the process may not be finished. Continue until you receive a clear response that cancellation is registered.
What if money is charged afterwards?
Compare the new payment with confirmation before complaining. It may concern an earlier period, another account or another subscription.
If the charge appears wrong, write to the billing provider. Give the payment date, amount and proof of cancellation. Ask for an explanation and a refund if you believe the payment has no valid basis.
You can write: “I cancelled the subscription on [date]. Confirmation shows an end date of [date]. Nevertheless, I was charged [amount] on [date]. Explain what the payment covers and refund it if it was charged incorrectly.”
Keep the reply. Do not call a payment unauthorised merely because you disagree about an agreement you started yourself. The bank or a complaints body needs an accurate explanation of the problem.
Avoid paying another business to cancel for you
Use the original provider's channel before paying another business to send a cancellation. An advertisement in search results may belong to such an intermediary.
Forbrukerrådet's annual report for 2025 discusses complaints about businesses charging to handle cancellations. This is a practical issue to consider when searching for help.
Check the website address and who you are entering an agreement with. If a page asks for payment, read what it actually covers. It could be a new agreement with the intermediary, rather than confirmation that the old agreement has ended.
Use SamfunnPrep's first-week checklist to gather important agreements and payments. A simple subscription list with provider, account and next payment date makes later cancellations easier.
