Industrial mechanics are skilled workers needed in several Norwegian industries. To find a suitable job, connect your experience to specific machines, maintenance and troubleshooting. A job offer and documented qualifications need assessment before you plan your residence.
What does an industrial mechanic do?
An industrial mechanic maintains, repairs and assembles machinery and equipment. The work may also include troubleshooting, replacing parts and modifying machines.
This is described by Utdanning.no, the public careers portal operated by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills, HK-dir, checked on 4 October 2026. The occupation exists in mechanical engineering, food production, shipbuilding and the oil industry, among other sectors.
The job title alone does not tell you which machines you will work on. Experience with one production line does not automatically suit every other line. Start by describing the equipment and tasks you know.
If you have extensive experience and want a Norwegian vocational qualification, the guide to obtaining a trade certificate as an adult may help. This article first helps you choose jobs and document relevant experience.
Is there a shortage of industrial mechanics in Norway?
Nav, the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration, identifies construction machinery and industrial mechanics among occupations with substantial shortages in its 2026 employer survey, Bedriftsundersøkelsen. The survey was published on 20 May 2026 and checked on 4 October 2026.
Nav estimated a shortage of 5,750 workers across industrial occupations as a whole. This figure does not cover industrial mechanics alone. Construction machinery and industrial mechanics are mentioned as a combined occupational group.
Shortage figures describe employers' difficulty recruiting qualified workers. They are not a list of vacancies or a promise of a job in a particular city.
Read Nav's 2026 survey alongside current advertisements. Jobs may require different equipment experience, languages and working hours. A national shortage does not mean every applicant is suitable for every position.
Which employers should you investigate?
Look for employers with machinery or production similar to your experience. Utdanning.no describes work in several industries; you do not have to start with the oil industry.
| Industry or workplace | What to investigate | Experience that may be relevant |
|---|---|---|
| Food production | Production equipment and maintenance procedures | Production repairs and maintenance |
| Mechanical or chemical industry | Machines, processes and working environment | Troubleshooting and assembly |
| Shipbuilding | Equipment types and project work | Assembly and mechanical tasks |
| Workshop or maintenance department | Customer types and responsibilities | Replacing parts and documentation |
This table helps you choose searches; it is not a list of available positions. Some tasks may require separate training or approval. Ask the employer to explain the duties the position actually involves.
Try several Norwegian search terms: industrimekaniker, vedlikeholdsmekaniker and mekaniker innen industri. Read each description. Related titles do not always mean identical requirements.
How do you describe your experience specifically?
Show which machines you worked on, which faults you resolved and what you were responsible for. This makes experience gained abroad easier to understand.
Prepare a skills overview covering:
- Names or types of machines and production equipment.
- Assembly, maintenance and repair tasks.
- Experience with hydraulics and pneumatics, if you have it.
- Use of drawings, instructions and maintenance plans.
- Documentation of completed work and fault reports.
- Education, practical placements and relevant courses.
Hydraulics uses liquid to transmit force. Pneumatics uses air or gas. Utdanning.no mentions these systems in its occupational description. Only use the terms in your application when they describe skills you actually have.
An illustrative example: instead of “repaired all machines”, write “performed scheduled maintenance and replaced parts on packaging machines”. Describe what you did yourself and what another specialist was responsible for.
Give the dates and your employment percentage. Two years in a broad workshop role does not automatically mean two years doing each individual task. A precise overview is easier to verify with a previous employer.
What should employment references show?
Ask previous employers for references describing your employment periods and duties. A reference containing only a job title may be difficult to use when assessing a job application or qualifications.
As practical advice, the reference should show start and end dates, the extent of employment, the workplace and relevant duties. It should also name someone who can confirm its contents. This does not replace an authority's official document checklist.
Check that your references and CV use the same dates. Explain gaps or overlapping periods if they would otherwise be unclear. Do not add tasks merely to match the advertisement.
Make readable scanned copies. Ask the recipient about translation requirements before paying to translate numerous documents. Keep the originals safe.
See how to write a Norwegian CV and application for the application format. Use your skills overview to choose the experience relevant to each job.
What should you ask at the interview?
Ask about equipment, training, working hours and who is responsible when something goes wrong. An interview should also help you assess the workplace.
Find out whether the work involves scheduled maintenance, repairs during operation or both. Ask how the team allocates tasks and whom to contact when you are unsure about a technical issue.
Ask for an explanation of shifts, any on-call arrangements and travel. An ordinary daytime job and one involving call-outs may fit your daily life very differently. Compare the conditions before comparing salary alone.
Also ask which language is used for instructions and safety training. The employer should clarify the language requirement for the particular position. This guide does not specify one universal language level for all industrial mechanic jobs.
Do not assume general mechanical experience entitles you to perform all electrical work. If the job includes such tasks, qualifications, the scope of work and applicable requirements must be clarified separately.
Can your experience and the job support skilled worker residence?
This depends on your qualifications and the specific offer. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (Utlendingsdirektoratet, UDI) assesses residence if you need permission to work in Norway.
As of 4 October 2026, the job must require skilled qualifications, and your qualifications must be relevant to it. UDI normally requires full-time employment and accepts a position of at least 80%. Pay and working conditions must be normal for Norway.
Document formal vocational education if you have it. If you intend to apply based on special qualifications gained through experience, follow UDI's requirements for extensive documentation. Long experience alone does not guarantee acceptance through this route.
An unskilled assistant position is not automatically skilled work even if you are an experienced mechanic. The actual requirements of the job matter. Nav's shortage estimate does not replace residence conditions.
Citizens of the EU/EEA, the European Union and European Economic Area, follow separate rules. Other residence permits may also confer different work rights. Use the guide to skilled worker residence and check your own status.
How do you make a simple plan for next month?
Choose a small number of relevant positions and work on the documents they actually require. This gives you a more specific plan than sending the same application for every mechanic job.
Start with a skills overview and two or three advertisements. Mark the requirements you meet, those you need to document and questions to ask. Contact suitable referees before sending your applications.
Next, check the contract, residence route and possible start date. SamfunnPrep's tools provide practical planning aids. Update your overview as new answers arrive so you can see which next step is still missing.
