Cheating on the social studies test includes using prohibited aids and attempting to do so. Phones, smartwatches and personal notes do not belong at the test. Lawful practice beforehand and approved accommodations are different matters.
If you plan to take the test in 2027, clarify the rules alongside the syllabus and test date. The rules below were checked on 20 October 2026 with Direktoratet for høyere utdanning og kompetanse (HK-dir), the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills. Check updates and your centre’s instructions before attending.
The guide to the social studies test format explains the test itself. Here you can distinguish permitted preparation from actions that may lead to removal, cancellation of your test or a ban on retaking it.
What can count as cheating in the test?
You cannot use your own aids during the social studies test. HK-dir also treats attempts to use them as cheating.
HK-dir’s registration page mentions false identification, electronic aids, other computer programs, dictionaries and personal notes among its examples. During the test, you must not communicate with anyone except test centre staff.
This means you must follow the centre’s instructions about your belongings. Do not decide a watch is harmless because you only want to check the time. Do not open another website because you normally use it to understand Norwegian words.
If you are unsure about an item, ask before the test starts. Wait for a staff member’s answer. A friend’s experience at another test or centre does not constitute approval for your test.
How should you handle your phone and smartwatch?
Follow the centre’s storage instructions and clarify equipment before sitting down for the test. HK-dir names mobile phones, smartwatches and smart glasses as examples of electronic aids.
Make a simple plan at home:
- Check whether you have electronics on your wrist, in your glasses or in your pockets.
- Read the invitation for instructions about what to do on arrival.
- Ask a staff member where your phone and watch should be kept.
- Put away personal notes and dictionaries as instructed.
- Explain if you need to contact someone for a practical or medical reason.
The last point is not a general exception to the rules on aids. The aim is to clarify the situation beforehand. If you need an aid for health reasons, this must be addressed as a need for accommodation.
Do not arrange to keep your phone hidden “just in case”. Ask for an arrangement approved by the centre. That way, both you and the invigilator know the conditions.
Are accommodations and reading aloud cheating?
Approved accommodations are part of the test arrangements. They provide an agreed way to take the test and must be clarified with the centre.
HK-dir says that if you need accommodations, you must contact the centre as soon as possible, no later than three days after registration. This information was checked on 20 October 2026. Request written confirmation of what was agreed.
Bring the confirmation if the centre asks you to. On arrival, check that the invigilator knows the arrangement. Speak up before the start if you are not receiving the agreed assistance.
A private translation app, friend or personal notes do not become permitted because you have language or reading difficulties. The guide to an accommodated test helps you find the right route. Use the centre’s official process instead of improvising on the day.
Can you practise with questions from the internet?
You can prepare with learning materials and practice tasks before the test. The key distinction is between learning the material and using prohibited assistance during the test.
Start with HK-dir’s official sample test and learning materials. Use other tasks to check understanding. A good practice answer explains why it is correct. You can then answer a new question on the same topic too.
Treat offers of “secret questions” critically. A seller promising identical tasks or a guaranteed pass does not provide an official test result. Do not hand over identification or registration to someone offering to take the test for you.
Use this check before buying a course: Does the provider explain who runs it? Does it distinguish its own practice tasks from the official test? Are prices and terms clear? Do you learn the material, or are you only told to memorise a particular sequence of answers?
SamfunnPrep is an independent practice resource. Practice results are not test certificates from HK-dir. Use SamfunnPrep’s tools overview to organise planning, and use the official test centre for registration and practical questions.
Does everyone automatically get a one-year ban?
No. HK-dir’s guidelines require a specific assessment of whether a ban and its length are proportionate. One year is not an automatic outcome in every case.
For social studies tests, the guidelines on graduated bans describe indicative categories of one year, seven months and four months, checked on 20 October 2026. Which is used depends on the individual case.
Do not read these categories as a price list for specific actions. The guidelines call for an overall assessment of the act’s nature, seriousness and other circumstances. A ban means you must wait before taking a new test. This differs from failing and registering for an ordinary retake.
For the Norwegian language test, bans are described in terms of test periods. You should therefore not directly apply a calculation from that test to the social studies test.
What if you receive a cheating decision?
Read the reasons and appeal information in the decision. You have the right to explain yourself and appeal under the rules applicable to the case.
HK-dir’s guidelines on roles and rights describe candidates’ rights. Note what happened, when it happened and which instructions you received. Keep your invitation and any accommodation decision.
Respond specifically to the information in the letter. Separate what you personally observed from what you think happened. Request help understanding the decision if the language is difficult. Follow the appeal deadline stated in the letter.
Plan your next steps around the actual decision. A ban can affect when you obtain documentation for a residence application. It does not by itself determine what happens to your temporary residence permit; clarify that separately.
