From 1 July 2026, the transition allowance for single parents is partially phased out. New applicants will generally only receive the allowance if they have sole care for a child under 14 months. If you already receive the allowance, you keep it under transition rules.

What changed on 1 July 2026?

Overgangsstønad is temporary income from NAV (the Labour and Welfare Administration) for single mothers and fathers. From 1 July 2026, a new law came into force (lov 12. juni 2026 nr. 27) that partially phases out the allowance. The allowance is now generally given only until the end of the month the child turns 14 months old. Previously, you could receive it until your youngest child was eight years old.

The law also tightens two other things:

  • Support for school expenses for single parents ends.
  • Support for childcare now applies only to the same, more limited group.

Who can still receive overgangsstønad?

You can still receive overgangsstønad if you have sole care for a child under 14 months. There is one important exception: if you have a child who needs special supervision due to physical, mental or significant social problems, the allowance can last until the child turns 18 years old. The need must be documented by a doctor. For children with extra needs, you may also have the right to basic support and assistance allowance.

Full overgangsstønad is 2.25 times the basic amount (G) in the national insurance scheme. In 2026, 1 G is 136 549 kroner, so the full allowance becomes 307 235 kroner per year before tax.

Do you already receive the allowance? Here are the transition rules

The changes apply only to new cases from 1 July 2026. If you are already receiving overgangsstønad, you do not lose what you have already been granted. NAV has a transition period until 30 June 2031, during which the old rules can still apply to you. If you applied before 1 July 2026 and meet the requirements, your application will also be assessed under the old rules.

What can you get instead?

If you fall outside the new rules, there are other schemes that can help you:

SituationPossible support
You lose your jobUnemployment benefits from NAV
You need to return to workQualification programme (KVP)
You cannot support yourselfEconomic assistance from NAV

Contact NAV early so they can find the right scheme for your situation.
