Tautra klosterruin preserves the stone church of a medieval Cistercian abbey on an island in the Trondheimsfjord. Its roofless walls make the former scale of the monastery visible within the fertile landscape of Frosta.

The place1

The abbey was founded in 1207 as a daughter house of Lyse near Bergen. Only the church survives as a ruin. The monastery's other buildings are thought to have stood to its south and to have been made largely of wood, so the standing stonework represents one part of a much larger religious community.

History and local connections1

The monks combined worship with farming, gardening, fishing and animal husbandry. The abbey closed after the Reformation in 1537. Fortidsminneforeningen acquired the ruin in 1846, its first property purchase after the association's foundation. The site's later history is therefore also a story about the beginnings of organised heritage preservation in Norway.

What to look for1

The west gable still stands about twelve metres high. Walk around the walls to understand the church's long rectangular form and the surviving openings. A digital reconstruction on the owner's website offers another way to imagine the medieval building. The modern Tautra Mariakloster is a separate institution nearby and should not be confused with the medieval ruin.

Planning a visit1

Fortidsminneforeningen provides current site information, while local tourism contacts can help with group guiding. The ruin is an outdoor monument: take the weather into account and avoid climbing fragile walls or entering closed areas. If combining the visit with the island's other attractions, check each institution's arrangements separately and observe local guidance around the bird reserve.
