Vang gravfelt
Vang gravfelt in Oppdal is a vast Iron Age burial landscape with around nine hundred mounds. Archaeological finds show that the mountain community participated in wider networks of travel and exchange, rather than living apart from the surrounding world.

The cemetery is especially associated with the Viking Age, around 800–1000 CE, but excavations in 1999 revealed graves reaching back to the Migration Period, around 400–600 CE. The many mounds and cairns make the landscape itself the principal monument; individual objects are held elsewhere.
History and local connections1
Finds indicate farming, hunting and trapping as well as contacts between mountain districts and the fjords. Objects connected with Ireland have attracted international interest. These discoveries help explain the cemetery as evidence of a socially connected community, while the size of the field points to burial activity over generations.
What to look for1
The museum describes a landscaped heritage area with interpretation signs. Finds from the field are kept at NTNU’s University Museum in Trondheim, where some are exhibited. This distinction matters when planning: a visit to Vang concerns the burial landscape, while viewing excavated objects may involve a separate museum destination.
Planning a visit2
Check Oppdal municipality’s current warning before planning any walk. In 2026 it advises against entering the field after storm Amy caused major damage and more than 150 uprooted trees. The older museum description of an open walking area should not override that notice. Wait for confirmation that the area has been made safe and cleared, protecting both visitors and archaeological remains.
