Places with a story
Norsk sagbruksmuseum

Norsk sagbruksmuseum preserves the industrial environment of Spillum Dampsag og Høvleri near Namsos. Machinery, workshops and transport tracks explain how forest resources became timber, prefabricated houses and other products within a coastal industrial town.
The place2
The complex stands near the mouth of the Namsen river. Its factory building preserves several stages of wood production, alongside a blacksmith's workshop, storage buildings and other premises. Tracks for small carts connect the buildings and show how materials moved through the sawmill. Visitors can follow this process and examine the saws and machines that smooth wooden boards.
History and local connections2
Peter Torkilsen and local forest owners established the sawmill in 1884. Steam power allowed production near shipping facilities and reduced dependence on river flow and seasons. A fire destroyed the saw building in 1894, but it was rebuilt with greater capacity. Commercial operation continued until 1986, with interruptions and changes of ownership along the way.
What to look for12
Products included ordinary timber, fish boxes and prefabricated buildings ranging from fishermen’s cabins to villas and schools. The museum partly resumed operation in 1991, and the heritage authority describes continued use of historic equipment for traditional production. The tug Oter adds another connection between the mill and the transport of timber on water.
Planning a visit1
The museum is at Linbergveien 16 on Spillum. Check the operator for current opening and guided visits; winter access is offered by arrangement rather than an assumed daily schedule. A tour is particularly useful for relating individual machines to the production sequence. Ask staff which equipment and vessel areas are available during your visit.
