Selje kloster stands on the island of Selja off Stad, where medieval monastery ruins meet the history of coastal travel. The surviving tower, church remains and traditions about Saint Sunniva make this an island visit with both architectural and religious layers.

The place1

The Benedictine monastery was founded in the eleventh century. Its position mattered along the coast: ships could shelter while waiting to pass the exposed waters around Stad. The monastery church was dedicated to Saint Alban, and the remaining buildings show that monastic life required accommodation, care and practical infrastructure as well as a place of worship.

History and local connections1

Riksantikvaren describes the placement of a guesthouse and sickhouse away from the monastery's main buildings, reflecting concern about sickness. The island also preserves a cave and church ruins associated with the legend of Saint Sunniva. That tradition should be understood as a religious narrative, distinct from evidence about the construction and daily operation of the monastery.

What to look for1

The tall surviving tower gives the ruins their recognisable outline. Walk with the guide through the remains to understand how individual walls belong to the former complex. Restoration carried out in the 1930s can be identified by small stones marking the join between original medieval masonry and reconstructed portions, making conservation itself part of what visitors can learn.

Planning a visit2

Fjord Guiding Selje operates guided boat visits from Selje and publishes a booking calendar. Confirm the sailing, weather arrangements and return before travelling; reaching an island ruin requires more planning than a street-side visit. If you want to combine the monastery with walking on Selja, ask about the appropriate landing and route when booking.
