Bryggen is Bergen's historic harbour quarter, where timber gables facing Vågen lead into a network of narrow passages and courtyards. Its surviving layout preserves evidence of merchants' everyday lives and the city's long relationship with North Atlantic trade.

The place2

The Hanseatic merchants traded air-dried cod from northern Norway for imported grain and other goods. Their warehouses, offices and living quarters formed long building rows running back from the waterfront. UNESCO recognizes the quarter for this distinctive arrangement of buildings and its testimony to a historic trading community.

History and local connections12

Repeated fires changed the buildings without erasing the original layout of the plots of land. Much of today's appearance comes from rebuilding after the great fire of 1702. The Bryggen Foundation was established in 1962, and Bryggen entered the World Heritage List in 1979. The story is therefore also one of repair, archaeology and the decision to retain an old urban district.

What to look for12

Go beyond the familiar harbour-facing gables to observe the wooden external corridors, tight passages and stone cellars further back. These elements served different functions in the trading yards. The Bryggen Foundation describes an inhabited quarter with craftspeople, artist studios, shops and other businesses, giving the historic environment continuing everyday use.

Planning a visit1

The outdoor quarter and individual museums or businesses have different access arrangements. Consult the Bryggen Foundation and the relevant operators for exhibitions, tours and current opening hours. Walk carefully through the narrow passages and respect restoration work: maintaining timber structures and the archaeological layers below them is essential to the place's survival.
