Places with a story
Klokkargarden

Klokkargarden in Dale is the childhood setting of poet Jakob Sande and a cultural meeting place in Fjaler. Several buildings connect family life, school, writing and storytelling, so the visit concerns a small inhabited cultural landscape rather than one isolated author's room.
The place1
The farm became the municipal home of the sexton and teacher in 1862. Jakob Sande's father and grandfather held the sexton's role, linking the property closely with the village's church and education. Bestefarstaua, the house where the poet was born, is now a museum, while other buildings support the centre's current literary and community work.
History and local connections23
Jakob Sande was born here on 1 December 1906. His first poetry collection, Svarte næter, appeared in 1929, and his writing became an important part of Nynorsk literary culture. The Jakob Sande centre opened in August 2020, extending the place's work beyond biography to oral and written storytelling, education and creative activity.
What to look for1
Compare Bestefarstaua with the main childhood home, the barn and the old school. The centre describes a writer's residence and offices in the house, a cultural venue in the barn, and a café, bookshop and shop in the former school. These different uses help explain how the place supports new stories as well as preserving memories of the poet.
Planning a visit1
Check the centre's visit page and current programme before travelling to Dale. Exhibitions, performances, workshops and other events have their own arrangements, and working or residential spaces should not be assumed open for unrestricted entry. Contact the centre if you want a guided introduction to the buildings or a visit connected specifically with Jakob Sande's life.
