Stangfjorden Bruksskule
Stangfjorden Bruksskule connects Askvoll's industrial history with a living place for geology, culture and community activity. Built as a school for an aluminium settlement, the restored building now serves as Fjordkystparken's local centre in Stongfjorden.
The place1
British Aluminium Company built the school in 1918. The building belonged to an industrial community where education, power production and manufacturing shaped daily life. Today its interpretation brings those subjects together, using geology and local industry to explain why this coastal village developed around more than fishing and agriculture.
History and local connections1
The municipality later sold the building for one symbolic krone to Stongfjorden Bruksskule AS. Local voluntary work helped renovate it for new uses. This history of community ownership matters: preservation here has created a shared working and cultural place rather than merely leaving an empty historic school on display.
What to look for1
Fjordkystparken describes activities linking geology, industrial heritage and cultural life. The former school provides space for exhibitions, meetings, music, theatre, crafts and food-related events. Sunnfjord Geocenter is an important partner. An arranged visit can therefore introduce both the materials beneath the landscape and the people who adapted the old school to present needs.

Events and cooperation with the veteran boat MS Stangfjord are separate activities; the building's cultural role does not mean that all rooms or exhibitions are continuously open.
