Places with a story
Vasskraftmuseet

Vasskraftmuseet in Høyanger preserves machinery and interpretation inside the former Kraftstasjon 1. The museum connects mountain water resources with the rise of aluminium production, allowing the town's industrial history to be understood through the equipment that supplied its energy.
The place3
Høyanger municipality describes an original generating unit, with turbine and generators, as the central exhibit. Tools and other equipment from the power station broaden the collection. This gives hydropower a material scale: the story concerns machines and maintenance as well as dams, pipes and the movement of water through the mountains.
History and local connections13
The first power station operated from 1918 to 1979, according to the regional heritage account. Vasskraftmuseet was established in 1986 within the old station on Hydro Høyanger's industrial premises. The municipal heritage plan describes displays tracing power development in the surrounding mountains from 1916 to around 1980, placing one generating unit within several decades of expansion.
What to look for32
Maps, photographs and film help connect the machinery with the wider industrial landscape. Look for the relationship between power production and the aluminium factory rather than considering the station as an isolated technical building. The separate municipal Industristadmuseum in Byporten provides a complementary account of housing, working life and the town's rapid transformation.
Planning a visit342
Current unrestricted museum opening could not be confirmed. Because the collection is inside Hydro's industrial area, contact Hydro Høyanger before planning a visit and establish whether access can be arranged. The municipality's published opening times concern Industristadmuseum in Byporten; they should not be applied to Vasskraftmuseet or treated as permission to enter the factory area.
