Norsk Kvernsteinsenter introduces Hyllestad's millstone industry through Kvernsteinsparken, an outdoor museum among historic quarries. The cut rock and unfinished stones reveal a trade that turned a local geological resource into essential equipment for grinding grain across distant communities.

The place2

The area's garnet mica schist was particularly suitable for millstones. Quarrying began as early as the eighth century, and stones were shipped over long distances during the Viking Age and Middle Ages. Their value came from an everyday need: grain had to be ground before it could provide food. The quarry landscape connects geology with work, trade and household survival.

History and local connections1

Local volunteers organised efforts to bring the quarry history to wider attention during the 1990s. Partnerships with universities, the heritage authority and the geological survey helped develop research and interpretation. Kvernsteinsparken opened in 2002 with a ceremony attended by Sonja, the queen of Norway, and the museum joined Musea i Sogn og Fjordane in 2013, retaining a strong link with local engagement.

What to look for2

Follow the stoneworker trail through the demonstration quarry to see how stones were shaped and removed from bedrock. Traces of extraction make the scale of the earlier industry visible without needing a reconstructed factory. When organised activities are offered, using a hand mill connects the quarried product with its practical role in preparing food.

Planning a visit2

The operator states that the park itself is open throughout the year, with staffed interpretation and guided activities during the summer season. Check the current visitor page for precise dates and arrangements before expecting a demonstration. Wear footwear suitable for an outdoor quarry landscape and follow the marked routes around the historic stone surfaces.
